This week in Science: A series of #deepfake videos “starring” Tom Cruise has security experts freaked. A well-done faked video of a titan of industry like Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk could convince unknowing traders to sell off shares when the company remains on solid footing.

This week in Science: The Simpsons could replace its current expensive cast of characters with #AI. A recent episode used previously taped segments from voice actor Marcia Wallace, who died in 2013, to tell a new story about Bart’s teacher Edna Krabappel.

This week in Science: Higher levels of acidity in ocean water can ruin a fish’s ability to hear. Teams studied reef fish and found that they can be 10 times less sensitive to sound as acidity increases.

This week in Science: A relatively near-ish Earth-sized planet, GJ 1132b, might be on its third atmosphere. Researchers think the planet lost its original layer of protective gas due to its proximity to its home star.

The #VR app Wander has been around for years, but only known to those who bought the @oculus Go, a device that didn’t support waking around or hand tracking, or the pricey Rift. With Quest 2’s $500 price point, suddenly #VR is accessible.

For perspective on high quality consumer grade #VR’s $500 entry point, when the #VCR was introduced in 1977 it was priced at $4,300 in today’s dollars. The Quest series of #VR headsets from Facebook are poised to become the VHS of the industry.

Back in Stratford, Canada, @Brittlestar would leverage existing web infrastructure through Google Streetview using the $10 app “Wander”. Your avatar and those of your fellow tour group are visible. Bonus feature: you can mute Chatty Cathys and smart-asses “contributors”.

The $15B a year VR video game industry today is expected to grow 30% every year for the next 5 years (CAGR, source: Grandview). VR porn, meantime, isn’t expected to reach a $1B/year for 4 more years. Adopting #WebXR would change all that overnight for Montreal’s Pornhub, et al.

Keeping the non-geeks interested in #VR will require content beyond pew-pew-pew and bow-chicka-bow-wow. And by overlaying on top of the existing web infrastructure the #WebXR ability we can trigger a virtuous and accelerating circle of adoption and development.

Video games are always one of the two strongest drivers of new technology adoption (porn being the other), but interest in making human connections like @brittlestar’s virtual tour of @justinbieber’s home town and home to @stratfest will bring Normals into #VR. But Keeping them?.

Until #VR is commonplace, addressing the issue of #VRsickness is critical when designing a website for VR. Just because you’ve got a third dimension doesn’t mean you have to go crazy with it. There’s even an “if prone to barfing” feature built-in to the tech.

With about 3 million people using just the @oculus Quest 2 every month, the trajectory towards mass adoption of #AR #VR continues. The conversation about Best Practices for web design for this nascent technology is growing, too. (Thread)
