On 5th May 1973 21yr old Garda John Martin Lally 17992B, a native of Belmullet stationed at Carrickmacross was on duty in Dundalk. While conducting a checkpoint on the Ardee Rd to try and intercept a known subversive he was struck by a car and died from his injuries.
