A lover and a friend to all proteins... the good, the bad and the amyloid
Joined June 2019
In our recent @JMolBiol paper, @AidanGrosas and I describe a mechanism where the aging of a protein in the human eye lens leads to cataract and blindness. We crystallized the protein with the help of @Jackson_Lab which proved to be the icing on John's cake

Do your proteins practice molecular distancing?. In this timely piece, @AidanGrosas shows why the molecular chaperone αB-crystallin is best to steer clear of crowded places.
Very excited to see this one out!. With Agata on large-scale #deuteration, Jitendra on the #SANS beamline @JitendraMata, David on the TEM @gammaDave1, and John bringing the expertise. An awesome collaborative effort. Thanks @deuteration for highlighting!. A short thread. .

Did you know that Midichloria mitochondrii is an endosymbiont found in tick mitochondria? Its name comes from George Lucas’ midi-chlorians, the organisms present in all living cells that give rise to The Force #MayThe4th

It's official. cataract is in part an amyloid disease of the lens: The new findings highlight the seminal work of Meehan and co (2004; 2007) showing crystallin fibril formation in vitro. What about under crowded solution conditions as found in the lens?.

Professor Sir Dobson was modest about his achievements. When I thanked him for his help and contribution to the field, he replied "But the secret is that I have a fabulous group. I just keep up with them when I can." Thank you, Chris, for giving us something greater to aspire to.
Professor Sir Christopher Dobson, Master of St John's College, has died age 69. He is survived by his wife, Dr Mary Dobson, their sons, Richard and William, and his beloved dog, Jimbo. Full story and tribute to this extraordinary man: We are bereft.
