I started a new experiment with my new “one sec” Shortcuts Automation app: it enforces to take a deep breath before opening social media. After two weeks of use, my screen time is down by more than 40%:
But how does it work?
I built this app for myself in the first lockdown of 2020, because I spent way too much time on Instagram and online news.
After using the prototype for two weeks, I noticed my screen time was down 44%…and decided to publish it on the AppStore!
Spotlight on iOS is soooooooo slow. sometimes takes 15 seconds to show search results. It’s in an unusable state. This is on an iPhone 13 mini, the real-time spotlight experience.
Am I the only one?
I plugged my phone into my MacBook to charge overnight.
But my MacBooks battery died at some point.
So then my phone decided to put all its juice back into the MacBook.
And was dead in the morning.
MacBook is at 17% now.
Not really what I intended 😅
The immediate effects are that you‘ll become aware of your unconscious social media habits: opening Instagram while waiting for the bus, just because you’re bored. This is often not an aware decision. And taking a deep breath helps you to reflect on yourself in that moment.
When opening social media apps, the “one sec” Shortcuts Automation is triggered, and guides you to take a deep breath instead of showing the app you intended to open. Afterwards you can decide with a clear mind if you really want to proceed to the app.

The setup works through Apple’s Shortcuts app, which comes pre-installed on your iPhone. Go to the Automations tab, and select an “Open App” Automation, add the “one sec” shortcut, and disable “ask before running”.
That’s it. Here’s the app:
Ho sviluppato quest'app per me stesso durante il primo lockdown del 2020, perché passavo troppo tempo su Instagram.
Dopo averla testata per due settimane, il mio tempo trascorso sullo schermo era diminuito del 44%…ho deciso di pubblicarla sull'AppStore!
Long term, “one sec” increases the effort of opening a particular app. This makes it less likely that you open an app just like that. If it ain’t worth one deep breath, you won’t need to open that app anyway.
The weather app on iOS 17 has the most accurate rendering of the moon I have ever seen in software 🤯
Look at how the lighting of the craters changes depending on which side the sunlight is shining from!

Even after 2 weeks of using the app every day I find myself in situations where I unintentionally open Twitter, and then a deep breath is just what I needed: to realize that I didn’t want to open Twitter at all.
@renanhiramatsu
True! However, social media has its benefits that I still encounter every now and then. My goal is to establish a healthy relationship with these apps – and delaying access has been the best working approach for me so far :)
@gabrielledrolet
a friend just sent me the link to this tweet, so I took a deep breath to view it!
thanks a lot for the lovely shout out! 🥰🥰🥰
for anyone wondering you can download my app “one sec” here:
“Vehicle Motion Cues is a new experience for iPhone and iPad that can help reduce motion sickness for passengers in moving vehicles.”
THIS IS GENIUS!!!
(if it works)
Whats the message of that marketing material? The left watch has clearly a larger line spacing! And my Series 4 can comfortably fit the exact same message?
wow this blew up

Are you also bored of watching Xcode process app uploads to AppStore Connect and hitting return every now and then? Well, I invented a new little tool that might help you too!
Now I can finally go to the kitchen and prepare some tea, and when I come back the app is uploaded! 🥰

I strongly hope that we are at a tipping point with advertising-backed business-models in internet platforms (e.g., Instagram, TikTok).
Only being focused on increasing users’ eye-ball-time leads to too many mental-health issues, and more and more users seem to notice.
Got some messages on how to become App of the Day on the App Store.

For the last decade, we have been focusing too much on how to make users addicted to our apps. I really hope this decade will fix much of that.
Do you know anyone who enjoys spending a large portion of they life on TikTok?
wow: on iOS 12.2 beta 5 finally voice messages on

seems to be fixed: they sound crystal clear now 😍
What changed?
I’ve quickly analyzed the voice files (new codec!):
Previously: AMR Codec @ 8000 Hz Sample Rate
iOS 12.2 beta 5: Opus Codec @ 24000 Hz
The strong results of the experiment (app usage ⬇️ 57%, life satisfaction ⬆️) back up what I hear every day from my apps’ users:
one sec helps them to find a healthy balance with technology for the first time in years: long-term and sustainably!
I started making apps when I was 15 years old…
…and last month I’ve celebrated my 11th App Store anniversary!
In 2011, making apps was super complicated:
I had to learn a programming language called Objective-C and abstract coding concepts like “object oriented programming”,
It's amazing how much attention the localization teams put into the online store. Like here, the German team: they rebuild the presentation, the pencil notes in the PDF, and even changed the books completely!…but then they forgot the new rounded corners😬
Finally, my new app Homie is live on the AppStore! A HomeKit companion that sits in your menu bar, and waits for your command. You can pin sensors to the menu bar as well, add keyboard shortcuts to activate scenes, or trigger special scenes automatically.
Here we go: I might‘ve gone a bit over the top here, but I love menu bar apps 🥰
Also, this might be the first app that I have ever ideated + developed + uploaded on one charge of battery.

UPDATE ALERT:
We’ve been working hard on this in the past months; summary in the Apple-style update slide below :)

‣ All new Block Screen designs
For those of you who are interested, “one sec” adds those moments of mindfulness to HealthKit as well and makes use of some nice CoreHaptics effects during the animation.

I’m sick of this black hole – 95% no response.
