Huge numbers of people have written to me expressing sympathy since the announcement in the Lords that I had been in a hospice. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank every one of them. The numbers are so great it is impossible to reply individually as I would like to.
To be successful in politics, you have to ride two political horses simultaneously. Rishi has done a budget for the hour and made the possibility of long-term prosperity to fight the next election. Best budget in my 42 years in politics.

What mustn’t be forgotten from yesterdays report is that poor whites remain at the bottom of the opportunity tables. Where are the policies specifically to deal with this?
Corbyn had me expelled from the Labour Party for objecting to thuggery and anti-Semitism. Now he knows what it’s like to have the party machine which one’s contributed to for decades to sling one out.
Brexit should begin a British renaissance that starts with the abolition of the House of Lords - I will present a Bill on Tuesday that seeks to replace the Lords with a new senate via
@Telegraph
I lobbied for a free port for Liverpool over the last three years and we now have one despite some local Labour opposition. Good news for local jobs.

Thank you to the people of Birkenhead for giving me the privilege of representing the town for 40 years in Parliament. I am no longer the town’s MP, but my bond with Birkenhead remains as strong as ever.
The EU's decision to invoke Article 16 is as grotesque as it is vindictive. For years, they told us there must never be a hard border on the island of Ireland. And now, they just imposed one – to distract us from their utter failure in vaccine procurement.
A mum with two young children has this week received a DWP letter. Her Income Support has stopped and she has to apply for Universal Credit. She has been in tears all afternoon. She will not receive any money, not even an advance, until after Xmas - 'I literally have nothing.'
Labour faces wipeout in large numbers of seats which voted determinedly to leave the EU, if last night's voting trends continue. Any more messing around in an attempt to cripple our Brexit negotiators could spell electoral disaster.
I’ve tabled an amendment to the Government’s Brexit motion which aims to give the UK the sovereign right to leave the ‘backstop’, and to mandate the Government to negotiate a comprehensive free trade deal with the EU. We cannot allow ourselves to become trapped in the backstop.
I was thrown out of the Labour Party after 60 years of trying to make it electable, as I resigned the whip over Labour's inaction on bullying and its hopeless stance against anti-Semitism. Whereas Peter Willsman is merely suspended pending an investigation
I raised in DWP Questions today the case of a woman made doubly incontinent by cancer. She was refused PIP and has since been cleaning and reusing babies’ nappies. She was so ashamed and couldn’t afford anything else. Feeding Birkenhead is now helping her. Major PIP reform needed
I’m really happy that we’re heading for an election, and that voters in Birkenhead will decide who they want to be our town’s MP. I’ll be presenting a clear programme which pursues social justice for our town, and which always puts Birkenhead's interests above those of any party
A little over a week since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited Birkenhead, here in the following Tweets are the contents of a message I've received which sums up just how much it meant, in particular, to children in our town:
The House of Commons has just voted unanimously in favour of my motion to cut the six-week wait for Universal Credit. I have invited the Secretary of State to witness the truth about the rollout, by visiting six UC black spots before the Budget.
George Soros would be better spending his money on solving what he describes as the unelected EU’s existentialist crisis than interfering in trying to overthrow the biggest ever democratic vote in Britain.
A constituent of mine hanged himself shortly after losing his Personal Independence Payment. I've asked for an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death, including the health assessment, so that justice can be gained for his relatives.
If Wonga does collapse, its assets should be used to begin building up a new system of banking and lending, backed by government, for families on low incomes, thereby reducing further the need for high cost credit:
For most of the last 99 years, Britain has benefitted enormously from the Duke of Edinburgh's commitment and service. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
Today marks the first move in over 100 years by a government specifically committing itself to a programme of work to eliminate child hunger in school holidays. Much more work to be done through pilot schemes & research, but a major step has been taken to end holiday hunger
Just received another extraordinary letter from the Secretary of State. Clearly the Christmas break cannot come too soon for him. No attempt made to draw upon the lessons from the poor mother's experience, to improve DWP service. Here is my response.
I'm refraining from making any comment on the draft agreement carrying out the result of the referendum until I've actually read the material that'll be published by the Government. I want to give a considered response & not commend or condemn it without having seen its contents
Had Tony Blair backed the workable proposals of an insurance-based welfare system we would now have a very different welfare state and one which the vast majority of voters would be supporting because you would have to pay in before you drew out.
"and to see how excited they were and their faces light up was just magical, and the fact they are still talking about it continuously has really made my day!"
For 40 years as the town’s MP, one of my great privileges has always been to stand shoulder to shoulder with Cammell Laird in good times & bad. Today is one of those great times. Well done to everyone in the yard who has delivered this success. It’s a proud day for Birkenhead.
"but the fact that yourself and both the Duke and Duchess took the time to interact with my group, to get down to their level, to ask them questions about the Braille cards they had made and more importantly to let them hug, hold their hands and touch their faces [...]
"is more than I could of ever dreamt of for these children! I have supported two of them since they were 4 years old and they are both now 11, they’re not only my students but dearly have a place in my heart and always will [...]
"I was able to organise for a group of our Visually Impaired children to visit Hamilton Square on Monday when Prince Harry and Meghan came to Birkenhead. For the children I support and the many others that came down to welcome them truly is a once in a life time opportunity [...]
But the Government is now limiting parliamentary time. We now have only a few days to bring a vote of no confidence against the Government. Realistically, only Labour can bring one. If it does, I shall vote to dismiss the Government. [2/2]
I’m tabling a motion today which seeks to give the House of Commons an opportunity to register its view on each of the possible Brexit choices facing our country. This will test opinion to see if any way forward commands a majority amongst MPs.
In the EU referendum, Birkenhead voted Leave. I strongly considered opposing the Prime Minister's Brexit deal, but will now be voting for it as a means of implementing that result. I will not aid & abet those in Parliament whose real aim is to stop Brexit:
Together with Baroness Butler-Sloss and Maria Miller MP, I will be conducting an independent review of the Modern Slavery Act so that greater justice is gained for the growing number of people enslaved in Britain and through business supply chains:
I gained an unequivocal "yes" from Michael Gove, on whether we will take back full rights over our fishing areas after Brexit, and he will discuss with colleagues the question of every fishing port being a free port
I made a plea, during this afternoon's Westminster Hall debate on Britain's sovereign defence capability, for greater certainty in the supply of shipbuilding orders to enable our own yards to win defence orders and ensure our Royal Navy ships are built most effectively
The PM has some serious questions to answer. But I wish we could have a legal system which gave access and justice to poorer people as it is able to do to richer people when they wish to take on the government.
What a stunning day for Birkenhead. Their Royal Highnesses have officially opened our citizens’ supermarket and community cafe, ‘Number 7’, and are visiting Tomorrow’s Women and The Hive this afternoon
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have arrived at Number Seven cafe in Birkenhead. They were welcomed with gifts from a local primary school

I suspect that several Premier League clubs will break their record transfer fees today. Why can they not find a fraction of those sums to ensure all their ground staff who keep the clubs running are paid a living wage?
Today I've been in the MoD lobbying for Cammell Laird. I argued that the fleet support ships, which are out for competition, should be viewed as part of the defence budget & not subjected to foreign competition. We'll know by Christmas whether this lobbying has been successful
The election results suggest a deadly challenge to Labour. Some previous Labour voters have voted for the Tories straight off without calling in on the Lib Dems or the Greens. To win back these voters and prevent a further haemorrhage is a Herculian task.
As always, Wirral Momentum is 100 percent wrong. I resigned the Whip over your bullying and thuggish language and because the Labour Party would then take no action. I was told that by resigning the Whip I would be expelled and expelled I was.
@frankfieldteam
@PennyMordaunt
To nobody's surprise, you're not telling the truth.
Here are some facts:
You resigned from the Party.
You stood against the Party in the General Election.
The people of Birkenhead overwhelmingly decided you would no longer represent them in Parliament.
Good riddance.
On every occasion, I've voted for a negotiated Brexit settlement. This would have carried out the referendum decision - reached in Birkenhead and across the country - and prevented the hard Brexit we now face. I've always opposed crashing out and will continue to do so. [1/2]
Around 900 children were able to access free meals and activities during the six-week summer holiday. Huge thanks to all the staff and volunteers who contributed to this monumental effort from Feeding Birkenhead.
I’ve asked for years to stop the wicked deductions for past debt from peoples Universal Credit and other benefits. Another victory from today's

. Trots can put that in their pipe and smoke it.
The design & delivery of Universal Credit means there is a gulf between how much families should receive & what they’re actually paid. Moreover, many thousands of vulnerable people are not receiving help when they most need it:
Congratulations to
@RishiSunak
in changing his employment scheme when he needed to. I lobbied for these changes and they are another important initiative to try and protect jobs.
THREAD - Wonga's loan books are likely to be sold and, if the past record is any guide to the future, those loans will probably be sold at knockdown rates. Within these loan books are likely to be some devoted exclusively to the exploitation of the poor.
Can even the World Cup produce a better result than this? It ranks among the most substantial judicial interventions ever to support vulnerable workers in this country. The decision is a mega knockback to those companies still using old means of exploiting vulnerable workers.

An employment tribunal has found that a group of 65 Hermes couriers are workers, not self-employed, in a “landmark” ruling, the GMB union has said
I met Mike Ashley this week to try and find a way of safeguarding the immediate future of Birkenhead’s House of Fraser. I’m really pleased to announce that we have succeeded on this front - Birkenhead's House of Fraser SAVED from closure
A Birkenhead resident came to see me about neighbours from hell living in the flat above him. He tried umpteen times to get the authorities to help, but nothing happened. We need both an increase in Police officers and a renewed focus on protecting decent people in this situation
People are going without food. They're going without heat. They're going without other basic necessities. Those now facing not only poverty, but destitution, must be first in the queue for any relief the Chancellor can grant in the Spring Statement:
There should only have been one vote necessary today, to deliver on the result of the referendum. When we come on to the legislation, we must build consensus. While 52% - in Birkenhead and across the country - voted for Brexit, the views of the 48% who didn't mustn't be forgotten
They will also launch new projects that are at the cutting edge of fighting poverty, draw even greater attention to the inspirational work being done by Tomorrow’s Women Wirral, and witness the impact The Hive is having on the lives of so many young people in Wirral.
Following up this news, I met with the Defence Procurement Minister this evening both to emphasise again the strengths of, and to register my support for, Cammell Laird's joint bid with BAE Systems. If successful, this would see five new Navy ships being built in Birkenhead.
Really encouraging news that Cammell Laird has made it through to the next round of the process for the new frigate contract. I'll continue to do all I can to support the yard's bid for this major order: MoD announces shortlist for new frigate contract
The inquiry I’m launching today will shine a bright light on the extent to which justice is being evaded in the gig economy. In particular, which companies continue to stick two fingers up at their workers and the legal system after tribunals/settlements?
I have been in Downing Street today making the case both for Cammell Laird to be awarded the new frigates order, and for the speeding up of the Mersey Ferries order.
Yesterday in the House of Commons I offered to break the law to get, and bring back, the medicinal cannabis Alfie needs to treat his epilepsy. Today the Government has taken the hugely welcome and long overdue step of issuing the necessary licence -
Feeding Birkenhead’s latest project, the Citizens’ Supermarket, will be opening its doors in a few weeks. Here’s an update on the huge amount of work that’s being done to make it a success for the town
I’m not satisfied with a Budget that leaves in place those austerity measures, in particular the various freezes on benefits and tax credits, most severely affecting families with children. On those grounds alone, the Budget should be voted down.
