I'd like to speak to the jerk at Microsoft who decided to put the power button between the Page Down and Delete buttons on the Surface laptop. Just a chat.

When one of the part-timer kids moves on to a thoroughly-deserved role at an investment bank, we wish them all the best.... Thanks for your hard work Andrew.

Our country can be very slow to do the right thing when doing so removes any remaining doubt that we had been doing the wrong thing. Every system and person has some of that inertia, but the Australian political system has it in spades.
It amazes me that so few people are up in arms about this. Even hyper partisan Labor supporters should want to curtail the rise of organised crime and put $10bn per year back into federal tax revenue. They’ll scream ‘tax the rich’ all day to raise an extra $2bn at the risk of

I feel @Chris_arnade might find this interesting, as an outsider with a lot of interesting comments/questions about Oz

A reminder of how uncommonly safe Australia (or at least Sydney) is vs much of the world. You can queue in public to buy physical gold, and have a reasonable expectation of being able to jump on the train, bus, uber and make it home without being robbed. I hope we never lose that

The Iron Law of Megaprojects remains undefeated - "over budget, over time, over and over again". Snowy 2.0 cost goes from an estimated $2bn at commencement to maybe $25bn now. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't your tax dollars going down the drain. https://t.co/O5mQ4xM6YD

Snowy 2.0’s total cost is likely to be approaching $30 billion when all project components are included.

One of my posts about Iryna Zatutska has been flagged as illegal by… the Australian eSafety Commissioner 🤨 I knew the Australian government was crazy since covid and since they locked up nationalist activists, but why are they demanding X censors a European activist talking

It could be the physiological effects of sauna heat. It could be the regular short breaks from the kids. Who's to say. Get on it.
Regular sauna use (4–7x weekly) is associated with a 50% lower cardiovascular-related mortality and a 40% lower all-cause mortality These benefits occur because heat exposure from sauna use closely mimics the physiological effects of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise Similar

ALWAYS: Gabfests over external threats to trust in institutions and costs of falling trust NEVER: Real talk about the trajectory of deserved trust worthiness of said institutions, largely under the control of those same politicians (Need I say both sides? Don't make me)

There are so many ways that we pay for rapid population growth that few of us properly recognise as a cost/consequence of rapid population growth. Here's one.

Also, this is a strange way to explain a huge amount of incremental electricity demand with zero incremental supply. The electricity demand situation in the US is changing rapidly after decades of relative stability, thanks to hungry bots. Supply will need to change too

OpenAI is building a huge computing warehouse in Texas, with immediate plans for two more elsewhere in Texas and one somewhere in the Midwest. 20-50 years ago, anything grand like this would have been built in California. I wonder if anyone in power in Sacramento cares

What's going down in Canada and New Zealand vs what's happening in Australia makes for a very interesting A/B test. (Not that we'll learn anything)
Canada has now seen a cumulative 30% real house price decline nationally from the 2022 peak. How much further to fall? Let's hear your best guess.
