gas stations in Los Angeles county. This is illegal discrimination, the Romanian portion of the sign literally says “not a single gypsy.” These are literal racial slurs being posted on stores promoting 1950s style segregation.

EVERY SINGLE meaning of the g word relates back to Romani people, either romanticized or stereotypical views of our culture i.e. “traveling, free-spirit” etc. The word was literally created to dehumanize us due to our skin tone and foreign origin, it is a slur in every context.

take down the sign, however, considering this type of discrimination is literally illegal and the harm it causes to Romani communities, it’s disheartening to see that there are no consequences for this behavior. Thank you KCAL for reporting on this.

What I don’t understand is even if we go with this “Roma actors that fit the role/star power are impossible to find” idea (which I don’t agree with), why the constant whitewashing? At the very least cast a South Asian and have them be trained by Roma, there really is no excuse.

I talked to some Polish Roma who said they recognized and knew some of the Roma on the show in the ensemble but the main cast is basically all white gadje or mixed disconnected Roma and that it feels like Roma are being pushed to the background for a show that’s about them.

Yeah, I saw. However, it says that Cher and Salma don’t identify as Asian which is blatantly wrong. Each identifies as Armenian and Lebanese respectively, which are Asian ethnicities.
