Wake up, you cannot "vote with your wallet" in a publicly traded company. Oh, you paid $60 on a game you like to say "I want more of this"? That's cute. However, BlackRock literally owns $200 billion dollars in Microsoft stocks and they want a bloodbath so stocks go up 5% in Q2

Hand-drawing dungeon maps may sound terribly dull, but it was a core feature of some of the biggest RPGs of the 80s. I also wouldn't want to play most modern RPGs having to draw my own map, but there's a good reason why some dungeon-crawlers are still designed around that idea🧵

Of all the research I did, the history of Chinese RPGs is my favorite. It blew my mind how over 200 PC RPGs were created in the 90s and early 2000s, an output rivalled only by Japan and the US! And yet, we never talk about these games... So let me give a very brief overview🧵

As someone who absolutely loves Dragon's Dogma 1, DD2 seems like a 10/10 sequel so far. It's crazy that this gem is being review bombed. I don't like microtransactions, but these are just early boosts of stuff available in-game, like RE VII and DMC 5 had. It's all online drama.

Real talk: the 2000s saw such a degree of consolidation that people still expect an entire art field to be "consumable". This is absurd and unhealthy - a brain-rot from when the industry reduced "video games" to a few AAAs a year. You NEVER played all good games, you NEVER will

Crazy that Dark Messiah is 18 years old. The PS3/Xbox 360 really was the last big generational leap. Also, it's still a fun Arkane game. You can see how they would re-visit much of this in Dishonored.

PRO TIP: The most important info in any survey is "who's paying for it". This one is done by Griffin Gaming Partners, a venture fund for "gaming-related Web3 companies". No shit their live service definition is any "regular update cadence", these are fake stats for shareholders

People often ask where I find obscure non-English games. The important thing is to understand that the "English internet" is just one of many. Things you can't find on Google, Youtube & Wikipedia might be huge on Bilibili, Naver, Weibo, Aparat, VK, Kakao, Namu, LINE, Baidu, etc

We talk a lot about the gorgeous pixel art in Japanese computers like the PC98 & FM Towns, but we should also mention how French devs were absolutely killing it with the Amiga & Atari ST in the late 80s, making gorgeous comic book-inspired games:

It is quite scary how the US dominance over the discourse is rewriting our shared history into "everyone was a suburban kid with a Nintendo". Not just computers like the Spectrum ZX, Mac, Amstrad, C64, Amiga, etc... but also emulators, cracks & bootlegs are all washed away. :/

@JonComms I was taken aback when I learnt that NES and therefore Super Mario Bros just wasn’t that big of thing in UK. Not in comparison to ZX Spectrum etc. American narrative of video games consumption really has erased knowledge.

People are asking how to play non-English games that never got translated. Luckily, more and more options have been appearing! I used my phone's translation camera a lot, but there's OCR tools like Universal Game Translator and RetroArch that translate the screen with a hotkey!

It's a bit sad that Ultima Underworld received an graphically improved version for the Playstation 1 that for some reason was only released in Japan, and to this day it doesn't have any kind of translation.

@Fataldarkprince You're using real-world logic, that's not how these companies operate. You can generate "long term value" with several bloodbaths followed by "re-investments" & buying new studios. As long as line goes up. Remember, some of the biggest companies in the world never made a profit

You know what's funny? Free Fire reached 150 million DAILY players in 2021. You would think ppl would at least be curious about how a Vietnamese game became one of the biggest titles in the world... but no. If you only read mainstream sites you won't even know Free Fire exists.

BTW, the game in this image is Wizardry: The Five Ordeals, which is great if you are already familiar with classic Wizardry, but not a good starting point. So I'll make here a quick thread recommendations for classic dungeon-crawlers⬇️

IMHO, any canon at this scale is just useless. Even when breaking by genre, what does 2004's Fable even mean to someone in 2024 if they don't understand the shift of western RPGs from PC to consoles with the Xbox? Design doesn't exist in a void, it depends on context & purpose.

The final block shows that Chris got very frustrated with Robert, and the end result feels like he just couldn't get over that feeling. This is why PR & corporate-speak exists: so that shady millionaires can dodge every question and somehow look like the more reasonable side.

This. Imagine saying that people listen to Beatles, read Lord of the Rings or watch The Shining because of nostalgia. Funny how an industry so desperate for validation also works tirelessly to convince people that video games have expiration dates and are disposable...

To frame this as a nostalgia exercise is to do the work of companies that have so far largely succeeded in ensuring that video games as an art form never develop a genuine archival tradition or sense of history

FUN FACT: Rogue is from 1980, but the term "roguelike" was coined only in 1993. It started as a discussion at Usenet, from a user proposing to group together talk on games like Rogue, Moria, Angband & Nethack. This caused a lot of drama, and some arguments are rather familiar:

I'm fascinated by Anito: Defend a Land Enraged, a 2003 Adventure/RPG hybrid from the Philippines! You play as a son/daughter of the tribe's leader, and must search for your missing father while dealing with Spanish colonizers, Chinese traders & local rebels. The art is so cool!

Just watched Besouro, a 2009 Brazilian film. It's not a great movie overall, but it's notable for hiring Huan-Chiu Ku, a famous choreographer. The results is a capoeira master blessed by orixás revolting against a plantation owner - but with fights like in martial arts movies!

I wish more people tried Moonring. As the developer says, it's a love-letter to a style of RPG that has largely fallen out of fashion, emulating classic Ultima. It expertly plays with the genre - from modernizing keyword dialog to being an RPG with no levels & XP. And it's FREE!

If you enjoy more exploration-focused RPGs - stuff like King's Field, Lunacid, Grimrock, Arx Fatalis, Deus Ex, etc... then do try Lands of Lore 2. It gets a bad rep because its FMV & "multimedia" art aged poorly, but this is Westwood Studios at their peak, pushing RPGs forward!

It's weird how Fallout 1 was supposed to be a GURPS game, Steve Jackson pulled out and we simply never had a GURPS CRPG... ever! I really miss a sort of "universal" CRPG, where you can have all sorts of characters & settings - maybe combined with a time-travel plot, just for fun

Old thread, but here's a Japanese perspective on why kobolds are often portrayed in Japan with a dog head. Turns out it's all because of Wizardry - specifically Jun Suemi's re-design (the Western DOS version was more frog-like). Crazy how one game can shape culture this much!

It's shocking to me how often American critics simply ignore any context on foreign art. Machado de Assis is THE most famous writer in Brazil's history, this book is mandatory reading in high school and university entrance exams... but the dude calls it "long forgotten by most".

Wow, the CRPG Addict just landed a breakthrough in video game history: We always heard that the first CRPG was "m199h", a lost game created between 1974/1975. Evidence came out that this is untrue: the first was The Dungeon (aka "pedit5"), created in 1975
