But, as shown here, getting quality race/ethnicity data on decarceration from PDs, courts, prisons was nearly impossible. It's meant to be hidden from public view. Without investment in CJS data infrastructure & transparency, racial injustices persist. 🙏🏾@elizabhinton & team!!.

Our @theNASEM report cautioned agst the amplification of racial injustices as CJ systems decarcerated & we recommended explicit efforts to collect race/ethnicity data in order to monitor and intervene on disparate impacts of decarceration @WesternBruce.

NEW study w/ revelatory, important & utterly predictable findings:. White people were more likely to benefit from mass decarceration during COVID-19 and rates of Black people incarcerated increased in EVERY single state. Beautiful 🧵 explicating possible mechanisms.
NEW: Since Mar '20, the state prison population fell by at least 16%—the largest drop in US history. Yet at the same time, the relative number of incarcerated Black people sharply increased. We look at why led by @elizabhinton @big_data_kane @svscarpino.🧵
