8/8 Our findings highlight how socio-political legacies shape FLFP responses to economic shocks. Trade liberalization doesn’t affect all women equally—it interacts with local gender norms instigated by past institutions.

7/8 Historical context: Northern women experienced decades of socialist policies and wartime necessity promoting gender equality, unlike their Southern counterparts. This divergence persists, even among migrants.

6/8 Gender role attitudes matter. Women’s labor supply responses differ considerably between the socialist North and the formerly capitalist South.

5/8 Interestingly, export shocks shift labor from agriculture to manufacturing/services and into the formal sector, with women transitioning faster than men. Female workers are more likely to work for FDI manufacturers, which is generally considered better employment quality.

4/8 Why does FLFP drop despite expanding economic opportunities? The decline is driven by married women, particularly in wealthier households or those with high-earning husbands, where income effects outweigh substitution effects.

3/8 We use microdata (2002–2018) and trade data to measure the impact of export shocks, employing a Bartik instrument to predict provincial export exposure. 💡Findings: A 1sd increase in Export exposure reduces FLFP by 2.7pp while leaving male employment unaffected.

2/8 Vietnam: interesting, useful case for studying FLFP.- Female-to-male LFP ratio >90%.- Widening gender employment gap since the 2000s, coinciding with economic growth.- Historical division: North (socialist, gender egalitarian) vs. South (formerly capitalist, traditional)
