Gotta love it! 7 year-old (YES 7!) Audrey I. from CA working it. She has been an Epstein Hitting Online Academy member for 11 months and owns it. For those of you that think the program is only for older players, guess again.
Every swinger of a bat needs to master this upper body move. WE spend a TON of time on it since it leads to consistency and barrels…in case you’re into that sort of thing😏.
Judge's
@TheJudge44
new "knob" path makes him really short to the ball (barrel stays inside his back foot) and REALLY long through it. Much different than 2 years ago👍.
If
@TheJudge44
continues with his swing change from last night (no barrel drop & more knob slide), his consistency will go through the roof! If this hand path becomes permanent, the sky is the limit! Hat's off to you Mr.
@TheJudge44
for making the adjustment.
#gameofadjustments
A great hand path by one of the best. Is this what you are doing? Is this what you are teaching? If you are trying to extend your career and play at higher levels, you better copy the hitters that perform at that level. Success at 14U with a 25 degree AA doesn't play very long.
So a day late, but here is Correa’s oppo walkoff. The camera angle is a little behind so contact looks more in front than it is. Green brackets show his barrel is on plane and circle is contact. Notice his barrel doesn’t get under that plane...rather to it. Very difficult feat!
1st off, I could watch the camera view all day. What can we learn here? We talk about this a lot in our coach training. "Make sure the bottom hand can always see the ball." Don't load hands too far behind your body where they are cut off and you have to spin to get to contact.
Great body sequencing by the young
@ellylacocoa18
. Ted Williams said "hips lead the way," but it only works if those shoulders and hands stay put to allow for swing adjustability. This is an easy move to do "dry" and 1 of the most difficult to attain when a ball is coming at us.
Here's a cool comp I put together to show the importance of barrel control and vertical bat angle. On left, Soto squares up an outside pitch with a -24° VBA. The right side is a similar pitch here the VBA is -40°. Also, 👀 where barrel is right before and right after contact .
How consistent is your Vertical Bat Angle thru the zone? This is pretty good! Also, on plane with a 4 degree FB is how you can still get to velo even when you are late w/2 strikes. This was such a great piece of hitting in a crucial part of the game where a K takes away momentum.
How many amateur hitters can control the barrel enough to only have a -30 degree vertical bat angle on a pitch that low? For that matter, how many professional hitters can do that?
When does your BARREL intersect the pitch plane? If your barrel drops to the plane too soon, you will consistently be under good pitches and foul them back. I see it everyday in amateur and professional players. This example of
#vladjr
is as good as it gets.
I know there are many different ideas on hitting going on, but there is nothing like watching a successful big leaguer work on his craft. Notice how he works a lower ball flight oppo and higher ball flight to pull-side. Can your swing do this? It better!
Here's
@OU_Softball
@SandersCydney
demonstrating how to stay through a middle away pitch. Notice the 2-3 frames after contact..."pretty, pretty, pretty good!"
And this is how you glide and sink into your legs! He makes it looks sooo easy! This is why we work our early drills from a narrow relaxed base...to bring out our athleticism w/o complicating our natural moves.
The legend continues! Big Mike has done it again, enshrined at Cal forever! A two-way star that graduated in four years to go on to a 9-year big league career. I’m proud to be your son.
Pretty flat swing here by
@TheJudge44
the other night. Roughly a 10 degree upslope but check out the path of the knob...moves down and forward more than you would think. The knob really does control the barrel ✌️
The many ways to hit a HR😳 The key is practicing all scenarios...all speeds...and all locations. This swing definitely fits in the “wiffle ball” find a barrel category👌🏻
Kudos again to whoever adjusted
@TheJudge44
hand path (likely The Judge himself), but it is no coincidence why he's finding more consistent contact and barrels. This is a follow-up to the high pitch I posted a few weeks back...this is a low pitch. Upper dots represent knob path.
Great seeing my old pal
@casidychaumont
last week
@thelabbcs
for a few sessions. Haven’t seen her in a couple years, but after 2 hours we were able to get the bat-speed back up and the attack angle back down😁
#MIZ
Green lines represent same part of swing (just past contact for Machado & at contact for Ohtani). Both pull-side HRs, but Ohtani stands much closer to plate. Notice how Ohtani rushes his hands in front of his body before contact. This is an ELITE++ adjustment he does regularly.
Thanks to everyone that came in for my Hitting Coaching Training. We covered everywhere from Aruba, Canada, Alaska and of course right here in Columbia!
Here’s a great pic of my dad on the USA baseball team that played the Japanese team during the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He told me today “I have never been more emotional on a ball field then hearing our National Anthem while overseas. And I won a World Series!”
#proudamerican
This one may fuel some debates....but this is how you hit a pull side HR without hooking balls. Not saying this the perfect swing for all players, but one guy is an MVP and the other plays for a top D1 program. The crazy part, they aren't just hitting off a tee!
This is awesome! Cora calls a "Bad Take" a called strike that was very hittable. How many good pitches do we give away every season?? Have a plan, be aggressive and make sure your swing plane destroys mistakes.
Fun to watch the best in the world work. Here in bp, schwarbs is SUPER short to the ball (bat stays next to ear for a long time) & very level through the zone. This helps him when the game speeds up & the adrenaline is running. Not everyone is the same, but this works for most.
Don't sleep on extension! Why IT IS REALLY important. Here,
#bobichette
turns a possible punch out into a HR. Likely looking fastball and STAYS THROUGH this slider down and away to find a barrel.
This is great.I rarely get to see any video of my dad
#mikeepstein
because as he puts it "I was born before electricity." However, seeing him stretch at 1st and almost pull a groin is priceless...thanks for posting! Here's to the '72 Swingin' A's taking down the Big Red Machine.
@MLBNetwork
would love to dissect these for you...I already do so for the brewers😁 check out this barrel move compared to Bregman swing I will tweet at you next. Ask
@AlLeiter22
...I’m a real dude. Thanks.
Hitters don't give away at-bats, why would we...hitting isn't that easy, even with a 3-0 count. That pitch was middle away and he wasn't swinging out of his shoes, he simply barreled it to the opposite field.
Fernando Tatis Jr. smacked a grand slam on a 3-0 count with a big lead, leading to criticism from both managers.
What do you think about this unwritten rule in baseball?

You can see the slight hesitation at heel plant to buy time...a little more on the slider. Adjustability in the swing equals more success at the plate.
My annual Hitting Coach Clinic is all set for Columbia, SC DEC 4-5. There are 6 spots left for any coaches, private instructors or parents looking to spend 15 hours learning how we do things. Send me a message if interested and I'll get you all the details.
This is why proper extension can't be overlooked during the training process. This is about "as extended" as I have seen a player while still staying "back" & hitting a ball 461'! We don't always need to extend, but if you don't train it, you may end up rolling over good pitches.
Our little after-school driveway work. She says she wants to be like
@bailey_hemphill
and
@haley45lee
. I may need to get her on the other side of the plate to make that happen😆... and work in some more dead-lifts!

Great super-slow motion swing of future

Got to finally meet one of my remote training players in person for the first time yesterday.
@andyEY26
has been working her swing with me for over a year now and she is still 7! Big plans for this one! Wait till you see the shirt she made....

My dad, 10 yr MLB 1st baseman is never one to care about autographs as he played with or met many hall of famers. However this is sentimental. His uncle caught this HR ball on Sept 7, 1929 and waited over 2 hrs for the babe to sign it after the game. The Babe had 4 rbis that day!
In an era when home runs are dominating our game, professional batting practice isn’t a daddy-hack, HR derby. Instead, hitters work on the things that produce home runs like timing and balance, while swinging under control to barrel the baseball.

Likely the last visit with

before her COVID Senior Season. This year marked 12 straight years we have trained together over Christmas break...and this one was the best! Here’s to another memorable year “Beans!” 🤭
Staying back 👎 big body turn 👎 keep head still 👎 barrel on plane w/ good extension 👍. Traveling over 450 feet to right center for an upper deck homerun in old Tiger Stadium👍...WOW!
Quick trip to S. FL to see my “little” cousin

Pretty amazing what this HOF'er is doing right now. Here are 2
@PujolsFive
HR's 17 years apart! Obvious style/rhythm changes (and flexibility), but his swing is still in there from launch to extension.
#goget700
Relatively flat bat at launch and an -18° vertical bat angle at contact. What is your VBA on belt-high cookies? Better not be in the -30°'s or you will bring in limited solid contact by imparting too much side spin (both oppo and pull side).
#thiswasabomb

Have been a fan of
@mvptc37
since I saw his pre-draft videos. Here's a great shot from yesterday. Most players don't get on plane until their barrel reaches the inside of their front knee. If you get on plane before that, you may be losing barrel and minimizing your contact zone.
