The Environmental Inequality Lab Team have been working to build frameworks for real-time analysis of natural disasters and extreme weather events. The goal is to forecast vulnerability. Identifying who, rather than just where, will be exposed.

We have now finalized our post-landfall report for Hurricane Milton (took us longer than expected, but we'll be quicker next time). Identifying who is exposed is crucial to developing targeted, efficient, and equitable responses.

Tightening standards marginally isn’t going to do very much. Wildfire activity, for good reason, is excluded from NA designations. Historically we've undervalued the benefits and overestimated the costs of more stringent environmental regulations.

If we remove the wildfire component, 137 new counties would be in non-attainment using the lower 8ug/m3 cutoff. If we use the higher proposed cut-offs the comparisons are: 49 vs. 33 for >9ug/m3; 18 vs. 10 for >10ug/m3; 8 vs. 6 for > 11ug/m3.

In ongoing work we are exploring the implications of increasing wildfire activity for pollution disparities. Following the announcement our team calculated that 301 new counties would be above the non-attainment threshold using an 8ug/m3 cutoff based on 2018-20 averages.

The @EPA has proposed new Air Quality Standards for fine particulate matter, which is great news. Part of the challenge will be how they grapple with increasing contribution of wildfire smoke to PM.
