Euglena mutabilis is a photosynthetic fresh-water algae (I know it's actually a protist, but all the literature calls it an algae so that means I can, right?) that has an incredible tolerance for toxic environments. Pictured: CPCC 657🔬

By identifying transcript level changes in E. gracilis as a result of S and N pre-treatment and Cd exposure we enhance our understanding about how these organisms adapt in extreme environments. Look out for part 2 when I publish my own #RNAseq data👀.#algae #nature.

Although Euglena mutabilis exhibited a greater innate tolerance to Cd, efforts to enhance this tolerance using S and N were unsuccessful (actually inhibiting Cd tolerance); however, Euglena gracilis exhibited significant increases in cell counts and transcript level changes!

Glyphosate is able to disrupt the shikimate pathway, which is essential for the production of aromatic amino acids. While GMO cash crops are not impacted by the application of glyphosate, surrounding organisms and plants in competition will die from exposure.
