Let's put some happy queer stories out here to counter the recent attack to supporting diversity... Here's Lauren Esposito, a founder of @500QueerSci, championing queer scientists of colour. We have the power to create the scientific community we want

It was wonderful to have @NisbetAlice and @EH_Hayles back in time for Langridge lab Christmas! Definitely been quiet without them! A final little push to sort out the last bits of a wonderful 2024! Looking forward to help with the awesome things we have lined up for 2025!🥳
As we wrap up for a well deserved festive break, we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas from all of us in the Langridge lab + friends We look forward to sharing more of our exciting science happening @TheQuadram with you all next year... 2025 is gonna be our year!

Our @EmmaBeansworth has been busy again... 1st she presented our latest publication on #Salmonella Agona persistence in humans @TheQuadram's Annual Science Meeting. She did a great job summarising 3 yrs of work into 15 min See the bits she missed out here https://t.co/iDY38oiVbJ

It was exciting learning genome rearrangement. @gemma_langridge and Emma where great tutors and taught us some us some new exciting stuffs.
Day 3 of #comparativegenomics @MMBDTP week & @gemma_langridge taught us genome rearrangements are another #variation to watch for in #bacterial #genomics. Looks like all enjoyed getting involved. Over to @EH_Hayles & @NisbetAlice to lead your activity! Will Em wear a Xmas jumper?

Great to see the MMBDTP get so passionate during my favourite day of the comparative genomics week - a day full of finding deletions, insertions and genome structures. Plus a snow day! ❄️ I think an early Xmas jumper might be acceptable...

It is worth rewriting an unsuccessful grant in a day... It is worth rewriting an unsuccessful grant in a day... It is worth rewriting an unsuccessful grant in a day... The 3rd grant application for the same worthy project is so going to the lucky one! Right?🤞 #AcademicTwitter

It's our culture that needs to change how it perceives us. Being dyslexic is just different, but we are awesome. We are the ones that will help figure out how to overcome & adapt to humanities next challenges to continue to help us all survive & thrive. #DyslexiaAwarenessWeek 💪

In the context of human existence, writing is a very recent invention (~5500 years, probably by a dyslexic🙄). The need to read & write unlikely exerted any evolutionary selection pressure so the “problem” of dyslexia only exists in our culture & systems for measuring intellect

So when humanity faced challenges, it was the dyslexics who saved us. I imagine stoneage dyslexics who were hungry came up with the idea of scaring 🦣 off cliffs OR Egyptian dyslexics who ran out of stone came up with the idea of building boats to get stone from across the river

Some people became more specialised in exploiting preexisting information, while others became better at exploring & invention. Collaboration between these different, complimentary strategies allowed us to be more efficient & effective at adaption, explaining our species’ success

To survive, humans need to learn skills past down through generations, but we also need to be creative to find novel solutions to change. This research says as the 🧠 has limited capacity, the only way as a collective to be good in both is by specialising in different strategies
