11/n: Moving forward, it's crucial to develop comprehensive nature-based strategies that address not only GHG emissions and pollution but also the enduring geological impacts of human activities and alterations to the landscape.

10/n: Climate change is intricately connected to most of these processes. As we warm our planet, most of these feedback systems can negatively impact earthquake-related hazards. Relative sea-level rise can increases the risk of post-earthquake flooding, tsunami, and liquefaction.

9/n: Tsunamis:Degradation of coastal ecosystems like mangroves, corals, abiotic barriers like sand dunes, and excessive groundwater removal can increase tsunami inland reach. We need more research to better understand the impact of natural habitat restoration on tsunami hazards.

8/n: Interesting fact:wet rice cultivation dominates irrigated networks, contributes to ~11% of methane emissions. Recent studies show better water management can significantly reduce emissions. This can be combined with mixed crop cultivation to reduce liquefaction hazard.

7/n: Another human activity:agricultural irrigation networks raise water table height & inc liquefaction hazard. In Palu, Dutch colonial govt built the Gumbasa aqueduct to secure rice production. Irrigated area below aqueduct suffered lateral spreading killing 1000s of people.

6/n: These changes may have happened 100s of years ago. Construction of Mexico City by Spanish colonizers, through the drainage of Lake Texaco, renders the city vulnerable to liquefaction today. Hazard mapping should include former water bodies/reclaimed land in eq prone zones.

5/n: Liquefaction is prevalent in regions where natural landscapes are altered for infrastructure development. Activities such as draining marshes and swamps for housing (Christchurch), redirecting rivers, and building on former riverbeds (Tokyo Bay) have proven disastrous.

4/n: Climate change can indirectly impact landslide hazards. Changing weather (increased temp, changes in precipitation) can affect slope stability, promote forest fires & deforestation, increasing the number of landslides. We need more research to understand these links better.

3/n: Landslides are dynamic hazards, impacted by deforestation and slope modification. In Haiti, landslides mainly occurred on deforested slopes post-2010 & 2021 earthquakes. 53% of landslides after the 2005 Kashmir earthquake were close to areas modified by humans.
