So What? was what coral reef geologist extraordinaire Dr. Robert Ginsburg always asked his graduate students. Teaching students, posting on social media, giving presentations, or just talking science, explain the so what. Why should people care about what you do or your results.

Grand Cayman voters sank cruise pier development! Fought against this years ago, did local radio, tv. Got trolled. Thankful to some 65% that voted against it. Would have caused huge reef loss, impacted local businesses, jobs. Tourism not the enemy but it needs to be done right.

Check out how much the Gulf & Caribbean have recently warmed! A heat dome in the region is causing above average warmth, high humidity, light winds & abundant sunshine — a recipe for warming seas. And during June, a storm-sparking convective pulse could spawn a tropical system.

8:45 AM Update: Potential for dangerous storms today! Not everyone will see severe weather, but the ingredients are there for tornadoes, damaging hail and destructive winds. Pay attention. Have a plan. Make sure family, friends and co-workers are aware of the risk. #okwx

After some super busy severe weather days in April, you could be forgiven for forgetting that May is climatologically the peak of severe weather season. Intense weather is primed to impact parts of the Ohio River Valley today. Stay weather aware with the @weatherchannel!

Misinformation spreads like clouds in the sky & to State legislation. Contrails are harmless clouds created when planes release heated exhaust in a COLD MOIST atmosphere. No mind control, zombifying stuff here. If #contrails are outlawed, are airplanes, smokestacks illegal?

An evening of laughter about our underwater, on-land adventures. The amazing Dr Sylvia Earle, an extraordinary ocean advocate. We were on team that did maybe first live television interview living undersea. Hope to work together again to showcase importance of the #ocean to all.

Dramatic and misleading headlines continue to ERUPT about well monitored and studied Axial Seamount that poses no threat. "Mile-wide underwater volcano ready to erupt off the West Coast" - CNN, "Huge volcano off West Coast to erupt any day now" - Daily Mail.

Let the misinformation begin! Amp up headline for views! "New worry: Underwater #volcano off the U.S. coast is about to erupt" "Huge underwater volcano is swelling, about to blow...." Axial Seamount, 500km off Oregon coast, is well studied, monitored & eruptions pose no threat!

Reading underwater a few years back for kids at @GeorgiaAquarium (awesome), whale shark smacked me on side of the head with her tail (all were well). I say too much attention on me. I recently met expert Dr. Allistair Dove, he agreed: intentional whack. Whale shark 1, Ellen 0.
