For my justice column with
@gaytimes
, “Let’s Create Some Good In The World”: learn about activists past and present who shout down politicians, a method called “birdogging,” and why it’s good and important!
Two weeks before Pride month, organizers banned LGBTQ officers in uniform from the march. The celebration has become the object of heated debate: Is Pride too corporate? Should police officers be allowed to march? Is it a revolution, or is it a party?
Ashanti Carmon was a 27-yr-old black trans woman who was shot & killed 2 weeks in DC. Her family needs less than $4k to lay her to rest. Let’s do this:
A year ago today our community lost
#LayleenPolanco
, a 27-year-old Afro-Latinx trans woman was pronounced dead in a solitary confinement cell at Rikers. I am angry and committed to continuing to support her family as they seek justice for her death.
TW: anti-trans violence
BREAKING: Security camera footage reveals neglect and humiliation of
#LayleenPolanco
by Rikers COs. They are seen opening her cell door and laughing just minutes before she is pronounced dead. We need

.
We make fun of people stumbling with the LGBTQ acronym but it’s a quick signifier as to how often you actually engage us and how fluent you are in talking about our issues.
Muhlaysia Bookers is a Black trans woman who survived horrific mob violence last week. A local group are trying to raise 7k for her as she recovers. They're at 5.3k. Let's at least double it:
This just came out and I’m on the third episode and they use a trans slur. In 2018. As two trans women were murdered in the last 24 hours. Yeah fuck y’alls premiere event.
@NYCMayor
Not one single cop I saw deescalated a thing. Assemblymen who were trying to keep peace were maced. Your cops came to riot in riot gear, not the protestors.
Imagine ✨ if this many people were this engaged ✨ in changing the conditions of our world ✨not just every four years ✨ but all the time ✨ imagine the possibilities.
At this point, if you saw what you saw all last summer and still don’t commit to a billion-dollar immediate cut to the NYPD, you don’t really understand what is happening.

A friend recorded a video last night of the NYPD antagonizing someone in distress over a megaphone telling them to “shut the fuck up” to “suck my dick” and threatening to “slap the shit out of you”
@NYCMayor
@NYCMayorsOffice
this is unacceptable.
Decriminalizing sex work is an LGBTQ issue. It’s also an anti-violence issue. You cannot talk about the high rates of violence against trans women, particularly trans women or color, and not talk about sex work.
#PowerofOurPride
As an American, it pains me to say this.
The United Nations should investigate the United States of America for placing children in internment camps and violating both human rights and international law.
These copy and paste 280 character statements from electeds feigning shock and horror every time the NYPD brutalizes New Yorkers is getting really, really old.
Has a single question on sex work been asked tonight? Decriminalizing sex work is an LGBTQ issue. It's about safety and curbing violence against vulnerable populations in our community.

It’s mid July and they still haven’t canceled rent or secured a second round of stimulus. People are going to go hungry & be evicted. What is not clicking.
Perfect time to remind folks that Gilead refuses to
#BreakThePatent
to make generic PrEP. It cost on average of $6 to make PrEP for the month.
@GileadSciences
charges on average of $1600 a month for PrEP.

My straight friends might know one or two straight people estranged from their family but every holiday season I’m reminded of the large swaths of queer people in my community who are unable to return to their families.
The Board of Corrections just released a 17-page report on
#LayleenPolanco
with 25 separate recommendations for Correctional Health Services & Department of Corrections, as well as 12 key findings on the failures that caused her death. I’m halfway through it and it’s shocking.
Layleen Xtravaganza Cubilette-Polanco died in punitive segregation on Rikers Island on June 7, 2019. She was a 27-year-old Afro-Latinx transgender woman. Today, the NYC Board of Correction - independent oversight agency - published a report on her death.
This is all I will be tweeting about today. This news dropped on a Saturday. Don’t let
#LayleenPolanco
story not be heard. We need
#JusticeForLayleen
:
This is a really beautiful piece with Melania,
#LayleenPolanco
sister, sharing Layleen’s story. Take the five minutes and watch.
We were with
@VICENews
the day of the
@queermarch
& the video ends with footage of the attack by police.
After being tear gassed in a crowd, Portland’s mayor and police commissioner Ted Wheeler denounced federal officers for “urban warfare.”
Some protesters, recalling the city police’s past use of tear gas, mocked him: “You better be here every night, Ted!”
I’ll say it: I think it’s fucked up the ACLU is receiving over a million on this case and the trans young man who spent the last 6 years fighting is facing homelessness and is in poverty.
You cannot say “we need to do something about Black trans women dying!” and then not give them the mic. You cannot invoke Marsha, Sylvia, and Stonewall then get angry when trans women of color protest
#EqualityTownHall
Deadnaming trans people is an act of violence. Deadnaming a trans woman in her obituary, who died at 59-years-old, while also fighting for our rights at SCOTUS, is beyond disrespectful.
