In 2023, shoegaze is bigger than ever. Major label signees, unprecedented Billboard charts, record streaming figures, and mainstream visibility. The sound, look, and reach of the genre are changing. And TikTok is the engine. My analysis for @stereogum .

Framing herself as a victimized underdog, despite materially being the biggest artist in the history of music, is fundamental to her brand. Her fans can't just love her, ther adoration must be couched in *righteousness*. It's been a profitable approach for her.

Adult stans who behave this way are the enemy of music. Imbecilic philistines who are fundamentally incapable of understanding art and connecting with it on a human/spiritual level. Vacuous morons who only believe in hyper-capitalism and hollow idol worship. Pathetic wastes.

Lumping the "racist" M*m J*ans guy—who was canceled for being an edgelord at the age of 14 (!)—in with literal rapists and serial abusers is precisely why people outside of this psychopathic Twitter bubble don't take sexual assault/abuse seriously. A dangerous conflation.

That thing Oso Oso does when they get real quiet and Jade sings softly over palm-muted guitars and you know the song's gonna explode in a matter of seconds but you kinda want the tension to last forever. I like that thing.

This might be my favorite song on the Wednesday album. Such a quirky, creaky, evocative little song that just sort of jitters and squeals and rumbles, and then just when it sounds like it's ready to get going, it ends. I love it.

Been listening to 2009-era indie for the pod, & I find it really interesting that Chillwave -- this ephemeral, low-stakes micro-trend -- feels more emotionally/sonically relevant today than stuff like AnCo, Dirty Projectors & Phoenix that had a more widespread impact at the time.
