Off to Newfoundland tomorrow for #ASSETS24 where I'll present the final piece of my dissertation research! With @leahfindlater I outlined a framework for collective communication access technology research, and used it to analyze the last decade of captioning research

I finally wrote this paper, and it's now published at #CHI2024! I will be at CHI and am on the job market, looking for postdoc positions. I do interdisciplinary accessibility research -- if you're looking to add that expertise to your team, I'd love to talk!

I'm excited by efforts like para.chi and want to stay in this field to keep imagining how we can build an international community that includes people who can't regularly travel to conferences and doesn't ask people to balance their ethics and career advancement

Going to CHI was a last minute decision I didn't want to make -- not only is my dissertation due on Thursday ๐
but traveling to Hawaii does not align with my ethics or politics #whyCHI

I'd love to bring my interdisciplinary approach to new areas of accessibility research or related HCI research areas, such as AI, health, family, or educational technologies

My dissertation research has combined HCI, design, and disability studies and activist perspectives to reimagine the design of captioning technologies. Check out my recorded CHI presentation for an example of my approach:

Anyone else desperate for a paper on TikTok captioning and what the interesting things teens are doing with size/font/emoji/placement/etc might teach us about how to convey greater meaning in captioning and also the development (or lack thereof) of community accessibility norms??

I got to lead a fantastic team-@tessuheagle, @weerachets, Soo Hyun Moon, @liltove, @jonfroehlich, and @leahfindlater-in analyzing hundreds of TikToks, talking to caption users, and considering how to make sure that the increase in user-captioned content serves caption users well!
