somehow millennial women are saying "chat im pregnant" to ChatGPT in a way completely identical in form and function to the way a zoomer would say "chat im pregnant" as like weird second-person convergent evolution.

maybe these models have something to tell us. but i don’t think it’s the same stuff we have to tell each other. so i think my job is good for a while.

but if you want to get anything more out of it, i have a sneaking suspicion that the limited frame of another human artist is necessary to cultivate an inner world different enough from your own to mean anything to you. and thats really all anyone remembers when they log off.

that might work fine in the future as long as you’re only looking to have some cheap fun i guess. popcorn games are already mass produced.

this section of Looking Glass’ Thief manifesto from 25 years ago puts it better than i can. video games make the computer your play partner, and so ai makes the remarkable promise of solving some of the computer’s biggest shortcomings

it’d be silly to claim that any of what i just described will or won’t be solved in the future. i dont think anyone can predict that. but i think a model that doesnt suffer from these things would count as AGI, and a whole lot more would get snowglobed than just video games.

i also feel like every game developer gets good at making games by realizing why everyone is wrong about making games, in their own unique little way. and thats a process that doesn’t happen nearly as publicly as whatever the hell is in The Pile.

so i have basically zero confidence any llm would make something that isn’t the most derivative genreslop. it derives a world model from the relationships between words, and the language around games has been dogshit for like a while.

and with something like games - way more than most other art - you also have this issue where everyone worships outsider art while having no idea how to make it because all of their language for talking about games tries to turn high level holistic shit into Mechanics and Genres.

but you don’t want to be holding it’s hand because then it’s back to like ā€œcomputer, show me 6 foot tall big booty latinaā€ and you know everything that’s going to happen and the experience isn’t exciting or meaningful because prompting it spoils it.

fwicg, when without context, it makes the same kinds of games each time, and not even fun ones without taking some time to get it in a better headspace. if you do get it to be a little more tasteful or try to Do Something with its game it tunnel visions SUPER HARD.

well, you could have it just not be fully open ended. the model forms a plan, or set of constraints, or, hell it just implements an actual game. i’m not sure how good of an experience that would be though.

so fully open-ended ai generated ā€œgamesā€ are a no-go unless the base model is intelligent enough to stick to its own Vision for an Intended Experience. id imagine that runs into a lot of other issues though. and like yeah a superintelligence can do anything whatever its a copout.

obviously not, unless you read into it like an abstract painting (and even then, it’s saying the same thing, everywhere).

with games like those, the ai model is the one being placed in the DM’s position, but the burden of creativity still mostly remains on the player in formats as open-ended as those. exploring the latent space is fun for a little while, but will it give you anything new?.

that’s a lot more shallow on both ends when it’s the kind of ai generated Experience that amounts to you typing what you want to happen and then watching it happen a la websim, ai dungeon, mirage, etc. but you can’t be both the DM and the Player. that’s playing with dolls.

id go as far as to say the most valuable art is usually only valuable because it didnt come from your own head. an artist can never discover something they already created - for them, its discovery was the process of creating it.

gonna be honest, I have 0 interest in AI-generated video games. the common man is a retard who knows not what he wants.
