Also (and this is delightful) Oregon is getting a Dolly Parton Imagination Library program! They mail free books to kids from birth until they enter kindergarten.

Per the usual, students bring the data and equity lens…adults, take note!
Student Rep. Frankie Silverstein asking whether the student survey suggesting unhappiness w/ winter break was a scientifically random sampling, and inclusive of students who might prefer to stick with the winter break option.

Board member Andrew Scott, w/a stuffed llama for good measure (IYKYK) on a tear. This was the wrong fight—the target should be Salem: Ed reform, revamp local option levy, get rid of the kicker. Everyone who texted him in fury he says should focus that energy on statewide change

Complete abdication of student centered leadership by Bonilla. Unacceptable. I hope she moves on to her next thing and fast.
Wow. This is the union head essentially encouraging teachers to take off days when they are supposed to be making up strike days. Mind blown. “She reminded members that they are able to take personal time, sick time or unpaid leave during the winter break days and do not have to

Story has been fleshed out, but there is a lot more to absorb. I also agree that framing this as "who won/lost" is a mistake and I will try harder to avoid that. We all lost something in Nov. Silver lining is maybe this forces a sober statewide conversation on $ for schools.

Super helpful rundown - thanks as always @jrlsilverman
Portland kids will go back to school tomorrow for the first time since Halloween (albeit two hours late). Here's our story unpacking the details: https://t.co/i5ZHlEjdLU

!!!!!! Kids back tmrw AND w/ plan to make up 11 instructional days. Fair salary increases for teachers, and a way better alternative to the mandatory minimum suspension policy. There is major rebuilding to do, but for now….me and my family are grateful to be returning.
📣@PPSConnect and PAT reach a tentative agreement. School tomorrow. Ratifications votes to be scheduled. More details to follow.

Great point. I’d argue we keep to assessment schedule and use the results to both assess impact and chart a course for recovering the lost time - both academics and rebuilding relationships/routines. And in elem schools, I’d say we could skip Q1 report cards.
Me: "What if people try to cancel interim assessments in January? We will have to wait months before we know the true impact of the strike closures." Him: "Do you think Ts will grade kids easier in winter?" Me: "We will need standardized data more than ever." @PPSConnect

Is cautious optimism that we could be back to school on Monday reckless? Hot off the press via a teacher friend:

Let’s be real: @pdxteachers has sown division in our community and caused incalculable damage to kids that will reverberate for years—to get absolutely nothing they couldn’t have had before the strike. “Unconscionable” doesn’t even begin to cover it.

This lengthy strike has harmed students, the editorial board writes. Continuing to keep schools closed over a legally and ethically problematic provision sought by the teachers union is a breach of...

When the headline is “raises more questions than answers” and you are a full month into a teachers’ strike…it’s hard to know which emotion to call on😢😫😵💫😭😤
Woke up this AM to bargaining updates from both @PPSConnect and @pdxteachers which (typically) raise more questions than answers. I have asked for clarifications from all sides, but here's what we know right now: (1/7)

The fact that 44,000 kids have been prevented from learning and other crucial support for an entire MONTH is unconscionable. And the fact that the public has no real idea where things stand is unacceptable. Messages like this don’t help. Get kids back to school NOW.

Agreed. Today, focusing my gratitude on those who’ve been doing the hard, student centered work this month - which includes a great many educators who were used + sold a bill of goods about who this strike was really for. Teachers, I see you. Let’s get back to work and school.

I really believe most teachers don’t support these actions, and yet I’m not hearing many (ugh any!) speaking out. C’mon educator friends in PDX - you/we are better than this.

“The two sides need to get this done today” Thank you @TinaKotek for your engagement and for condemning the acts of vandalism against our volunteer board members. In a pluralistic democratic society it’s okay, even good when we disagree but we must be civil. Because humanity.

I’m sorry but this is the strangest @pdxteachers flex yet. The only reason this makes sense is in the context of “winning” being the goal, versus what’s actually in kids’ best interest. Teachers - I want to be with you, but what the what is this?!
