*This is after 7 yrs of oft-heated, deeply personal back-and-forth touching on issues of race, class privilege, equity, politics+school budgets+community building. Parents can still raise $, for, say, band uniforms, field trips, classroom supplies. No staff, as of 25-26 school yr

I remember my first day of 1st grade. I was ready with my red/white striped turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, ankle socks and a ponytail. I was crisp and ready and eager to learn! I witnessed this excitement yesterday. Go scholars at King, Jefferson and Tubman!

@PPSConnect Sources say that Peterson felt his background — which I detailed here, last week — was becoming a distraction to the issues at hand and taking a toll on his family.

There's no way to square @PPSConnect's talk about equity with its policy that allows schools in wealthier communities to "buy" extra teachers with parent donations. The details of any fix are tricky, but hope the board considers more than token changes.

So awesome! Mr. Cowley & @leodis_v McDaniel HS students are piloting an AP African American studies course this year, making them one of ONLY 60 high schools in the country, and the only in Oregon to do so! Thank you @jrlsilverman for a great read! Lots of great stories at PPS!

“This course needs to be everywhere people want it and probably in places where they don’t…The reframing and expanding of Black history, to be larger than enslavement and civil rights, is a really big deal.” A joy to spend time @leodis_v for this: https://t.co/8umFouy2O0

Quite a contingent at @PPSConnect this AM for a convo on school safety. No specifics yet on whether there are plans to put school resource officers back into city high schools after several recent incidents of gun violence adjacent to school grounds.
