“You know 350 million wasn’t accurate!” - Ed Balls challenges Michael Gove over the NHS ‘Brexit bonus’ claim that Vote Leave put on the side of their campaign bus.
🎧 Listen to our three part podcast series - ‘Inside The Room: The Brexit Plots’:
This is deeply, shockingly, horribly and indeed dangerously irresponsible. What on earth is happening to our politics.Has nothing been learned from the tragic and terrible murder of Jo Cox ?
"We can again start to put the fear of God into our MPs - they deserve nothing less after the way they treated us"
Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage launches his new Brexit Party
You can stay on as caretaker leader of a party while that party chooses a new leader. But you can't stay on as caretaker Prime Minister when you are leaving because you clearly can't command a majority in the House of Commons. That would wrong, unstable and dangerous.
I rarely actually tweet, especially about politics - am more of the silent retweeter - but after the chilling scenes in Parliament last night I just don’t think I can stay quiet anymore. There’s a group of young people and children that need to be spoken for. (A thread.)
Not a single revenue-raising measure in that Budget statement, not one: every announcement a spending commitment and entirely paid for by tens of billions of extra public borrowing year on year - in that sense we are definitely in a new era...
I’ve persisted for too long on the grounds that you should always listen to try to understand - but I’m now going to unfollow this ridiculous and bigoted anti-Semite because I just can’t read his appalling nonsense in my timeline any longer..
Labour leadership candidates, from Rebecca Long-Bailey to Keir Starmer, are queuing-up to kowtow to the Board of Deputies, and to accept their Mccarthyite '10 pledges'.
It's worth remembering that this organisation is at the forefront of ruthless Israel apologism in the UK.
I said last year that
@Mrs_katjones
is a genius and would go on to be a Knock-Out Strictly Superstar - And here we are! Huge congratulations to Katya and the brilliant
@mrjoemcfadden
- such worthy
@bbcstrictly
Champions! I’m so pleased for Joe and so so proud of Katya ! 😁
Well well. That was a turn-up. What a brilliant cook
@TomReadWilson
is.
#Celebritybesthomecook
was such a lovely lockdown show with fab fellow cooks. I'm dedicating the trophy to all the Mums & Dads who do their best & have a go in the kitchen. I hope my Mum will be proud
Praise where praise is due - the Government is taking the brave and right course by pumping massive support into the economy now to support jobs, business and the self-employed - it will help Britain bounce back quickly when the crisis is over
How could Education Ministers and Senior Officials possibly not have spotted that giving greater weight to teacher assessment in smaller cohort sixth forms would bias results towards private schools and against large sixth form colleges ? It’s beyond belief ..
This from OFQUAL report is pretty striking. Big boost for private schools in A level grades awarded. FE and 6th form colleges seem to have lost out. Presumably because more weight given to teacher predictions in small 6th forms. Not obviously fair.
Given the pain being caused to the real economy by the financial turbulence, it’s not clear why it is in anyone’s interests to wait 18 more days before the inevitable u-turn on the mini budget
No personal grudge Owen, I just objected to you claiming that all of the media (including us at
@GMB
) and all sides of politics are facilitating genocide against the Palestinians - felt like the worst kind of second rate Trumpian populism to me...
All I’d say is that
@edballs
is perfectly entitled to have a personal grudge - everybody has them! - but it doesn’t exactly scream professionalism to let that interfere with how you do your job in such a ludicrously unsubtle way
The BBC is discussing whether to drop Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory from the Last Night of the Proms in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement.
What an achievement: Castleford's Yeva and Zakhar, Ukrainian refugees living in the town, yesterday won the Open Blackpool under-12s Ballroom championship. To win an international competition so far from home when facing such destabilising adversity. Amazing. 🇺🇦 💃
What's the biggest problem you have with your name?
My biggest problem?
Me: "Hi, I'm Marcus. Nice to meet you."
Business people: "Hi, Marcus. Do you go by Mark?"
Me: "No. If I did then don't you think I'd introduce myself as that?"
Fascinating to watch the pain etched across David, Lord Pannick's face as his careful drafting of the former Prime Minister's written witness statement is being undermined by Boris Johnson's petulant tone and increasingly wayward answers - and we're only on the first questioner..
I love Sunday night at Glastonbury (well, our living room actually) - some of the great performances have been Sunday headliners, Beyoncé and The Cure to name two top ones - but this is right up there, a legendary set from the legend that is Elton John. Fabulous

Sam. Both Ofqual and DfE were told in April and repeatedly after that this chaos in pupil grades was inevitable once Ministers set the objective of no overall grade inflation. Either Ministers knew or didn’t understand. But the idea they only found out this weekend is laughable.
If that's true from Williamson it's astonishing. Even in a normal year we saw the data a few days before release. How on earth did they not ask to see it?!
Back from New York to find Wakefield speculation still running. I appreciate all the messages but for removal of any doubt, no-one's spoken to me about it and I've no intention of putting myself forward when the current MP finally resigns! See some of you later at
@camlitfest
Never thought I’d wear this shirt but from standing for racial equality to feeding school kids, this squad have made clear that they represent ME.
For anyone who ever used these lions to scare us, take a good look.
THIS is England.
And if you don’t like it, YOU go home.
One further, hugely significant, reason why Joe Biden becoming President of the United States is hugely significant and inspirational for me and very many others..
“Joe Biden will be giving the State of the Union address (if he’s the next President) with a stammer … and that's okay”
@EdBalls
tells
@peston
that he deals with his stammer by talking about it, and having a stammer hasn’t held him or potential POTUS
@JoeBiden
back.
#Peston
Can't tell you how much I enjoyed doing
@GMB
with the peerless Susanna Reid and how surprised and pleased I was when she raised my past struggle to manage mine. A chance to tell lots of people - young and old - that you can do it too..
Good week with
@edballs
this week
@gmb
- calm, considered and inspiring confidence in viewers who have their own concerns about stammering, which he spoke openly about. Thanks for being such good company 👍🏼
Just totally brilliant - one of those lifetime moments, when in years to come we'll all remember where we were when England finally won a football tournament..
#Lionesses
I just objected to you claiming that all of the media (including us at
@GMB
) and all sides of politics are facilitating genocide against the Palestinians - felt like the worst kind of second rate Trumpian populism to me...
This morning, I challenged media complicity in Israel's murderous onslaught against Gaza.
Ed Balls, to be generous, flipped over it.
Here's what happened 👇
Thanks for all your many moving and important comments on episode 2 of
#InsideTheCareCrisis
- it's so vital we all understand dementia better and that carers, domicilary care and unpaid carers are properly valued and get the support they so badly need
It's really hard doing these interviews for the first time, as I know from my own rather painful debut interview when I first stood to be an MP nearly 20 years ago. So well done
@sarahdykeld
for putting yourself forward - just keep on going past any initial bumps in the road.
I messed up in an interview on the first day of this campaign. My passion and desire to do this job got the better of me and I got nervous.
I'm going to spend every day campaigning hard and proving to the people of Somerton and Frome that I'm the best choice for our area.
