The H-1B program induced Indians to switch to computer science (CS) occupations, increasing the CS workforce and overall IT production in India by 15%. It also induced US workers to switch to non-CS occupations, reducing the US native CS workforce by 4.7%.

Counterpoint: H-1B visas, i.e., the opportunity for Indian software engineers to leave India for the US, helped power both the US *and Indian* IT booms.

I see many people arguing against this take👇that talented people should stay in their countries to help develop them, and I frankly don't understand why. Even if you are on the left, you should agree with this. How on earth does robbing a country of their best brains help them?

Is this controversial in India? Like at what point does the public start asking why it’s doing America this huge favor of identifying and educating our future tech executive and quant traders

nice new addition to the "brain drain" literature. @econgaurav (one of my fav economists of my generation!) and @nicomoralesg argue that increased *probability* of immigration leads natives to upskill, even if they dont actually immigrate. https://t.co/qDZuoQefPs

Congratulations @econgaurav for this well-deserved placement in the @JPolEcon! Years ago @DrDaronAcemoglu critiqued the 'credibility revolution' for too little attention to 'the centrality of general equilibrium'. A new generation has been fixing that. https://t.co/0m6ftjsM5t
