Unemployment rate is the usual metric to understand the ‘wait’ for employment, but how long someone stays jobless also matters. A new CSE WP by Kannan examines what drives unemployment duration & its impact on re-employment earnings and job type. https://t.co/rxBcqmBwjE🧵(1/7)

Group homophily (or segregation): We prove that if within group inequality (wt avg) is higher that overall inequality then increased group homophily will increase exp inequality and vice versa. The data also bears it out (clearer in regressions). 8/n

Experienced inequality decreases with wealth homophily. This is easily proved, and we also see it in the data. 7/n

We denote the effect of the network on exp inequality as r=E/G. Using data from the microfinance study by Banerjee, Chandrasekhar, Duflo and Jacksom (2013) to show that this works in the way we expect. Relative networks experience less inequality than moneylending networks. 6/n

This has some interesting implications, like the violation of the Pigou-Dalton transfer principle. in the case of experienced inequality, an 'equalising' transfer i.e. a transfer from a richer to a poorer node, can actually increase overall experienced inequality. 5/n

So, two networks with exactly the same wealth distribution can have very different experienced inequality because of the network structure. 4/n
