WILDLIFE NEWS: In the greater LA area, mountain lions and recreationists use the same areas. Researchers found that while mountain lions can’t really move out of the area, they are adjusting their active periods to avoid people. Read more here:

Mtn lions in LA deal w/ roads, habitat fragmentation, wildfires, & rodenticides- even small changes to activity may add stress to an already stressed pop. But their flexibility in diel activity likely helps support coexistence between lions and recreating people. 4/5

In areas with more rec, mtn lions spent 1 more hour/day resting and stopped activity ~20 min earlier before sunrise. Female lions were more active during the day and closer to dawn/dusk than males. 3/5

LA is 1 of 2 megacities w/ big cats, so recreating humans and mtn lions must share natural areas. P22 in Griffith Park (high rec) was one of the most nocturnal lions. Lions in the Santa Monica Mtns and Santa Susana Mtns (less rec), were more crepuscular. 2/5
