61 years ago, October 1 1964, 3,000 UC Berkeley students swarmed a police car that was attempting to arrest Campus CORE leader Jack Weinberg, making speeches and preventing the vehicle from moving for 32 hours. The incident dramatically escalated the nascent Free Speech Movement

The Free Speech Movement in Berkeley began on Oct. 1, 1964 when Jack Weinberg was arrested for sitting in Sproul Plaza at a table supporting the Congress of Racial Equality. 3,000 students surrounded the police car. A 32-hour stand-off ensued, people speaking from the car's roof.
