View of the Cal campus in 1941. Sproul Hall is under construction in the foreground, with Telegraph Avenue running in front of it. The buildings across the street are on what is now the site of Sproul Plaza and the student union.

The Free Speech Movement in Berkeley began on Oct. 1, 1964 when Jack Weinberg was arrested for sitting in Sproul Plaza at a table supporting the Congress of Racial Equality. 3,000 students surrounded the police car. A 32-hour stand-off ensued, people speaking from the car's roof.
