Hey good folks!
For the first time in forever, I decided (*cough* was told by my agent *cough*) to make a personal website.
So if you wanna see some of the stuff I've created and worked in and, most importantly, want to HIRE ME FOR THINGS, check it out:
This is SO GOOD
In the 1937 movie "Sh! The Octopus", they made this transformation by doing the witch's entire make up in one consistent color.
Then, they put a colored filter on the lenses that would negate that one color. Finally, remove the filter & the witch makeup appears!
When we pitch an original show, we want to have as many outlets to pitch as possible. Imagine having an US industry where you can pitch a kids show to only one or two places. The voices start to dwindle. Companies get all the power over the creators.
This is sad news if happens
Funny.
I’ve never been a girl from an Asian family that grew up in Toronto in the early 2000s, but Turning Red is one of the most touching, funny and sincere American animated movies I’ve ever seen.
When emotions are channeled through specificity they are HUGELY amplified.
Pixar is now focusing on films with “clear mass appeal” with less focus on directors’ “autobiographical tales” like ‘Luca’ and ‘Turning Red’
“The studio’s movies should be less a pursuit of any director’s catharsis & instead speak to a commonality of experience”

Mob Psycho 100 is such a masterpiece.
It takes a big cliche (insecure school kid has super powers) and flips it on its head beautifully.
It's not about the powers you have. It's about learning how to be a good person in this world, and gaining the powers of EMPATHY.
Amazing.
That's hilarious(ly sad)
You know who was able to "crack kids"?
CARTOON NETWORK
For over two decades. By making funny, silly, exciting, heartfelt creator-driven shows (not CONTENT)
You own that
While you're at it, greenlight the awesome COMEDY pilot we made for CN last year
David Zaslav on the performance of kids' programming on Max:
"We haven't really been able to crack the kids. We have a huge amount of kids content. We're going to attack that. We think that really differentiates us and we're going to have to really promote it. We haven't been."
Just wanted to give a shout out to BRAZILIAN ANIMATION!
If you`re one of my non-Brazilian friends here, you`re probably not aware that Brazil`s animation industry just gets better and better. These are shows that were announced or premiered just in the last 10 or so months! ...
Failure is part of our lives as creators. This year, me and Mark developed a HUGE pitch we absolutely loved called Night Mayor. We had a COOL studio on board with us, we had a BIG star attached, but it still didn't go anywhere.
Well, we learn, we move on, we post art on twitter.
Yes, it's upsetting every time a bunch of famous people tell us that animation "is for kids".
But the US industry needs to start making ADULT animated features to back up our outrage. I LOVE a lot of the US animated movies out there, but they ARE all kids/family movies.
White American guys upset when a movie isn't made for them...
I had to grow up with 80s movies about some friggin' kids biking in some Wyoming suburb or whatever, and I still enjoyed them.
If you can't connect to characters that dont look like you, it's called LACK OF EMPATHY.
Meanwhile half the people in the animation industry are currently unemployed, almost no shows are being greenlit, and Cartoon Network is pretty much dead. 🤮
After Warner Bros took various cost-cutting measures including turning movies into tax write-offs and refused to pay actors & writers for months, David Zaslav’s 2023 pay package is now at $49.7M, a 26.5% increase from 2022.

The state of the cartoon industry really makes me sad.
To think that CN is pretty much gone and that there are probably less than half a dozen 6-11 comedy cartoons being in active production in LA right now... it's just devastating.
I can't believe... 1/3
Like someone who fails to borrow a dollar & then asks for a million dollars instead, I'm giving a movie project a try!
So... any execs looking for a very personal adventure about cultural assimilation, told through the eyes of a Brazilian kid who moves to S. Carolina in the 90s?
Man... if you're going to make fun of "bad" animation in your movie, you better not have some weird-ass floaty fake 2D cell animation as an example of the "good" animation.
Every time I hear about a wish for "a renaissance of hand drawn animation" I roll my eyes. That`s a very US-centric view of our craft.
Hand drawn animation is alive & well in Europe or Japan. But some people would rather just see one Disney hand drawn movie every 2 yrs instead.
Next person who says that people make 3D animation because "it`s cheaper than 2D" is literally going to kill me.
3D👏is👏not👏cheaper👏or👏more👏expensive👏than👏2D👏it👏depends👏on👏many👏many👏different👏factors👏
(ok my hands hurt)
This moment in the animation industry will sadly impact its future.
Networks and studios aren't just missing out on great new shows, but they are losing VITAL people to the industry - artists and writers who are forced look for other jobs simply because we need to SURVIVE.
What was once a career her parents could “brag to their friends about” has devolved into “the exact thing that they were worried about and warned ... about having a backup plan for.”
If u have a platform as a creator, your silence can say A LOT.
Use your platform for good, u never know who it might affect. If ur not vocal about supporting basic human rights, u ARE taking the side of bigotry. F** it, but it`s true.
Art IS political. Even our silly cartoons.
Dear Pixar,
if you're going to make prequels and origin stories, then give us "Cars: Rise of the Motors", chronicling in painful detail the downfall of humanity to their vehicular overlords.
Appreciate it.
I quit my advertising job & went to animation school at 26. Got my first job in Brazil when I was 27, and only got a gig in Los Angeles at the end of last year, at 38 years old.
I hope there aren’t any 21 yr olds out there thinking they’re too old. Every journey is different. 😊
Took me til I was 25 to get in the animation industry and two of my coworkers are 35 and 39 and it’s their first art gig (after being in medicine and teaching!!) Seeing some disheartened tweets lately but please don’t give up! ❤️
It’s crazy that big companies don’t spellcheck their ads.
Let me fix it:
“From the creative visionary that left his previous studio under multiple sexual misconduct allegations.”
There you go.
Two reasons why I posted this:
1) First time I saw the effect I honestly couldn't tell how they did it. Movies are amazing.
2) The movie is called "Sh! The Octopus"
Sad news.
Episodic cartoon comedies THRIVE when they are allowed to build a sense of familiarity and comfort with their audience. It takes time to form that relationship.
With shows lasting so little these days it will be really hard to ever find a new SpongeBob.
@mikhasso
-a co-produção BR/Canadá do Cup e Dino custou 30/episódio
- a primeira temporada do Oswaldo custou cerca de 2.15/episódio
Other than the obvious anime influence, the thing that
#TurningRed
reminded me the most was really great 2d tv animation. The expressions, the snappy animation, the editing - it’s Gumball, SpongeBob, OK KO, Clarence, TC Roar, Amphibia.
A real testament to how awesome TV has been
I wanted to gauge if anyone would be interested in a (free) talk abt making animated show pitches & pitching them.
I’d love to give back what I learned over the course of selling 12 pitches I created or co-created. So many incredibly talented people out there I’d love to boost!
Young animation artists: know that there are some great animation executives out there. People who will support you and give great notes.
When you read news like that godawful R&S reboot, don’t take away that “execs are the enemy”. It’s a bad, jaded posture to start yr career
+
Condemning racism should not be a touchy subject, or a bold move for any decent person. If a couple of silly cartoon characters can do it, it should be very easy for any world leader to say the same.
WE`RE DOING IT!
Me,
@genegoldstein
, and
@bignosebug
are gonna talk about pitching animated shows next WEDNESDAY!
We`ll share our thoughts & experience on how develop and present your show idea. It will be very causal & we`ll do a Q&A too.
Bring some snacks! Link info soon!
Remember: you`re doing a goddamn cartoon
Don`t be an asshole, respect the ppl you work with, and don`t act like a spoiled child
If your cartoon didn`t exist, no one would notice & the planet would keep spinning. There are thousands of cartoons out there
Don`t
be
an
a-hole.
As someone who has a show I ABSOLUTELY LOVE in development at Cartoon Network, all the news about HBO Max imploding are really stressful. I’m avoiding scrolling Twitter for the time being. 😅
Dica pra quem ta começando:
Super joinha fazer contatos com outros artistas online.
Mas qdo for escrever pra alguém evite:
"Oi Pedro. Tudo bem?"
...
E então fique esperando a outra pessoa responder "oi".
...that there isn't an audience for these shows.
Big City Greens is still one of Disney's top performers, Loud House and Spongebob are evergreen at Nick.
There IS an audience. But this audience CAN go away if we stop making these fun, silly shows. We can have an... 2/3
...an entire generation of kids who grow up without the habit of watching these kinds of shows.
I hope this is just a phase the industry is going through. Where everyone feels lost and dumb decisions are being made.
BRING BACK SATURDAY MORNING!
Attention all up and coming cartoon creators!
Nickelodeon's shorts program is accepting show submissions! It's where I had my short Monster Pack made years ago, and it was an awesome experience that eventually led us to making the show Ollie's Pack.
Six years ago we were deep into the first season of Oswaldo, for CN Brasil.
It was a fascinating experience: no "adult supervision", trying to figure out on our own how to make a animated show.
It was the first time I had to do a style guide too, and I think it turned out ok!
There ya go! Six characters people on twitter told me they HATE. Now I feel kinda bad for them (except for Hugo. He was painful even to draw and he’s nature’s biggest mistake).
Sorry for the ones I couldn’t get in the image. But this was fun, so I might do it again.
#SixFanarts
I guess it's the Annecy effect, but it does seem like the animation industry is finally starting to pick up some steam.
I just hope we see more ORIGINAL brand new projects by animation creatives, rather than remakes, reboots, repackages and big-name-live-action-celeb shows.
Like it or not, one of the things that keep original ideas alive is COMPETITION.
The fear that if I don’t buy this super original show, someone else will and it might be a huge hit. Without competition, this incentive goes away. We’re stuck in the safe zone.
Hey folks! On this thread I`m going to post the entire
#cupcakeanddino
(now on Netflix!) original PITCH BIBLE.
A lot of people ask me about pitching their shows, and I thought I`d share a bit of my personal experience and lessons learned along the way. (It`s no crazy beast!)
I can't believe that making a quality kid's cartoon is a bad investment. An entire season of one of these shows costs a FRACTION of what Netflix spends making "The Grey Man" (200 million), a movie that has the cultural footprint of a grain of sand.
For example...
With WAAAY less than 10k followers, I’m pretty sure I’m a nobody. 😓
Hi
#NobodyArtistClub
!
I’m Pedro, 🇧🇷 creator and exec producer of Cupcake & Dino (Netflix), Ollie’s Pack (Nick) and Oswaldo (CN). Also co-creator of the upcoming preschool show Bean & Friends (Discovery Kids)
...we made 52 eps of Cup and Dino for 14M bucks.
Sure, the show didn't blow the world. But the NY TIMES picked us as one of the top new shows that year, alongside Barry and Killing Eve. We got a small but passionate fanbase that still watches it.
Feels like a good investment!
THREAD TIME! Ever since I posted the
#cupcakeanddino
original pitch, I`ve been getting various msgs from peeps who wanna know more on pitching shows and whatnot.
So, here`s a thread few quick things I`ve learned in the past 12 years, after successfully selling 4 different shows
Nosso trampo nao deixa a desejar pra NINGUÉM, so acho q a mídia brasileira podia cobrir melhor.
No. A thousand times no.
Use those resources to make a new show, to find diverse new voices in the animation world and elevate them. Instead, this only serves to perpetuate the legacy of a monstrous man.
The world will survive not having more Ren & Stimpy episodes.
I don't know why Cartoon Network is trending right now, but I'll use it to say that I'm VERY happy to be developing a show with them. What a joy it's been, super supportive folks, and we've been collaborating with some DREAM artists.
Really hope this sees the light of day 🌟
This fake pitch got such a good response during the live stream that I'm looking at it like... 😒maaaaaybe?
Anyways, Nickelodeon you have my number, right? RIGHT???
Coffin Joe (AKA Zé do Caixão) is Brazil’s biggest cinematic horror icon.
It’s a real bummer to have a group of American/UK dudes buy the character and decide to transplant him to Mexico to “mainstream” him to audiences.
Latin America is not a monolith.
I was overwhelmed by the support I got on my still embryonic feature project!
I got DM'd by a bunch of cool artists & was even contacted by a couple of studios interested in hearing more! So thanks to all!
Here's a quick concept for some foes from the Music Store in the Mall.
Dear non-Latinx creator or writer,
saying a character is simply "latinx" doesn`t really mean much. Latin America is made up of vastly different cultures (& languages!)
Be curious and bring specificity to yr character. Are they from Mexico, Brazil, Haiti, Peru or French Guiana?
Animation can tell ANY story, but the US keeps it in the realm of princesses, talking animals, superheroes and magic powers. If we want to really show these famous people what animation can do, we this industry here to make Flee, Paprika, Persepolis, The Wind Rises, etc.
To nostálgico hj.
(E sim, tinha um YETI PROFESSOR no elenco original do Oswaldo... 😑)
Damn.
Everyone was right.
RRR slaps so hard.
Hollywood blockbusters should be paying attention: I’ll take big, broad, incredibly inventive and SINCERE fun over any brooding “dark” superhero high concept blob.
It’s on Netflix and everyone should see it.
The dog whistle I hear in statements like this is always:
White, suburban, straight American is universal.
Immigrant, lbtq, black, Latino is “niche”.
SIGH.
Really digging
#Amphibia
! Funny, specific, and with lots of heart, just like the doctor ordered.
And Sprig has one of the best animation mouths EVER.
Congrats to
@Radrappy
and the entire crew! 🐸✨
@WacomBrasil
🇧🇷Alo alo!🇧🇷
Finally! Got my visa, my ticket, and I`m moving to Los Angeles in the 27th!
This move means more than an amazing career opportunity to me. It`s a fresh new chapter after a very hard personal year of dealing with my dad`s loss.
This one`s for you, pai!
Now let`s make cartoons!
This is easily my least favorite page of the book. Why?
1) on the most basic level, it fails to recognize that people function in different ways
2) it romanticizes abusive behavior by “genius men”. The young nice guy was asking a simple question, but it’s ok to respond with RAGE?
1/6
Seriously, our verbal pitch was 74 panels long for a 10-15 min presentation. It was a massive effort, and we were all a little heartbroken. But maybe we'll be able to revive it in the future. Who knows?! Any execs reading this right now down to make it? PLEASE?
Why most animated US films that depict different cultures need to be set in "ancient times" or just in a kind of "mythical era"?
I`d love to see one set in contemporary times, only it`s in Buenos Aires or Hanoi. Show diff. cultures NOW, & not as just relics from a magical past.
Oi pessoal!
@WacomBrasil
(continua)
2019 started as probably the worst year of my life: my dad had died recently, I had no permanent home, no fixed job, & felt detached from everything
Now I'm ending 2019 as the happiest I can remember in a long time. New city, dream job, & so much love and support
Hang in there
