Louisiana can’t rest on its laurels. Our students still need so much more! That includes public schools making big gains and more educational options that fit kids’ unique needs. #lalege #lagov #aschoolthatfits #schoolchoice.

Important reality, including in my home state of Louisiana. The solution isn’t to restrict parents’ choices. Instead, public school leaders must adjust, innovate, & use basic good business practices—what taxpayers routinely do with their own money & expect govt to do the same.

Great piece by my @ExcelinEd colleague Matthew Joseph: "Declining enrollment isn’t a temporary dip. It’s a structural shift. Yet far too many school systems are clinging to outdated assumptions and unsustainable models.".@matthewladner @MargueriteRoza.

Also fact: The U.S. will not emerge as the world’s leader on AI and technology more broadly if it continues allowing states to determine matters of interstate commerce through a growing patchwork of heavy-handed regulations.

Is this a federal takeover?.Actually, it protects state autonomy. Without a pause, the strictest state laws could end up setting national policy, similar to the internet tax debate in the ’90s.

AGAIN. 8th time. It's a shame that state lawmakers continue passing unconstitutional & ineffective laws that add government bureaucracy, erode privacy, & limit free speech--all under the false promise of protecting kids instead of encouraging parental responsibility. #lalege.

Great to learn about Florida’s example of enabling technology and innovation, not inhibiting them. Refreshing contrast to the growing, troubling patchwork of state AI & social media legislation that adds government, erodes privacy, and fails to protect users, including kids.

A federal tax credit education freedom program isn’t ideal policy for many of us, but it sure is comforting to know that our federal leaders are prioritizing kids and families when state leaders are not. #lalege.

🧵 The Senate just dropped new #BigBeautifulBill language and I wanted to provide an update on the federal tax credit scholarship program. It would be a $4 billion program. Eligibility capped to families within 300% of their area's median income (i.e., allows for regional COA.

Supporting “parent choice,” but giving families only government-run school options, isn’t choice. It means only rich kids can access private/homebased schools, courses, & services that can meet their needs. Poor kids get only what the govt directly operates. #lalege #schoolchoice.

Legislative leadership was notified on two occasions—in Aug and Oct 2024–of BESE’s proposed GATOR funding amounts and chose to ALLOW these funding amounts to go into effect as final rule. Then they chose to balk at the last minute. They could have raised any concerns last fall.

Let’s be clear: The legislature let these families down. They failed to deliver on an opportunity they created and signaled was forthcoming this fall for children across Louisiana.

To suggest that LDOE and BESE moved forward inappropriately is just plain false. They followed the law that lawmakers required. They advertised a new opportunity to families as directed.

Apparently a refresher is needed on what lawmakers voted on last year re: GATOR. “The department of education SHALL begin enrolling participating students not later than March 1, 2025, for the 2025-2026 school year.” Lawmakers, not LDOE or BESE, changed their minds. #lalege.

Thousands of Louisiana families asked for more educational choices—and their voices went unheard. Without funding for LA GATOR, kids will keep waiting for the opportunities they deserve. We won’t stop fighting for them. #lalege #lagov #lagator #laed #aschoolthatfits
