Follow up to this piece- some more thoughts on California's SB 53. This time I cover: - unclear third party obligations - whistleblower protections ripe for abuse - politically understandable but logically inconsistent carveouts / thresholds. Short 🧵.
I have some thoughts about California’s new AI bill, SB 53. This bill is rushing forward after the veto of SB 1047. At its core is a confused definition of “catastrophic risk.” A short🧵.

As @packyM reminds us in @notboringco, “Both optimism and pessimism are self-fulfilling prophecies.” The story you tell yourself starts to calcify. The question isn’t whether the prophecy comes true. It’s whether you picked the right one.

“Build boldly. Innovate freely.” — @isaiah_p_taylor at today’s @valaratomics groundbreaking. The countdown is on: 296 days until America’s first Gen4 reactor goes live.

One era's dream is another's default
Technology can change the world in ways that are unimaginable until they happen. Switching on an electric light would have been unimaginable for our medieval ancestors. In their childhood, our grandparents would have struggled to imagine a world connected by smartphones and the

@mkratsios47 @SenBaldwinGSPP @tedcruz @abundanceinst @SenTedCruz @ckoopman Sen. Moreno really wants US chip manufacturing, esp. in Ohio. Kratsios agrees. Energy matters a lot, we need an “all of the above” energy sources strategy.

Batteries, but better. @torusrev uses flywheels: fast, resilient, and fully US sourced + manufactured.

@mkratsios47 @SenBaldwinGSPP @tedcruz BTW, the @abundanceinst is a big fan of sandboxes; we called for this in our comments on the AI action plan, and we are very pleased @SenTedCruz is introducing this bill. Statement by @ckoopman:

The AI Action Plan was received with near-universal praise for its optimism, pragmatic ambition, and recognition of the need for US AI dominance. But there has been a steady drumbeat of AI pessimism from degrowthers of all political stripes. Excite to have the solid Plan back in

Here we go: age verification for AI. Yesterday Sen. Husted introduced the Children Harmed by AI Technology (CHAT) Act. I knew this was coming: proposals for age verification on social media are now being ported over to AI. If you care about child safety and innovation, here’s

Progress is quiet. Panic is loud. @mattwridley walks through some of the most common fears about our future—conflict, climate, inequality—and explains why the facts tell a more optimistic story.

Yesterday: - House Judiciary held a hearing on how EU-style regs harms free speech & innovation. - @SenAmyKlobuchar calls for EU-style "legislation that would make it all clear." But the clearest thing about EU laws is how they are killing the region's growth and innovation.
On Google, @SenAmyKlobuchar tells me she and her staff are still looking at the remedies decision that will allow the company to keep owning Chrome but says “it is a sign of why we need legislation that would make it all clear.”

Lots of AI therapy regulation coverage lately, but nearly every piece highlights Illinois & Nevada bans while ignoring Utah, the first in the nation without a ban. Bans aren’t the only option! Big miss to leave out the full story.
