Developed by researchers in the @fluidinterfaces group, NeuroChat pairs a large language model (LLM) with a consumer-grade EEG headband to create an adaptive AI tutoring system that dynamically adjusts to the user’s measured cognitive state.

This is an early glimpse of neuroadaptive AI - systems that collaborate with the brain, not compete with it. Imagine AI that adjusts to your focus while coding, or amplifies imagination while creating. The next generation of AI interfaces will be co-regulated by the human mind.

Why now? Another study from our group by @nataliyakosmyna recently showed that using LLMs for complex tasks reduces neural connectivity and cognitive engagement. Now we’re using the same science to counter that effect.

Built @FluidInterfaces in the @mit @medialab, we ran a pilot study (n = 24) comparing NeuroChat to a non-adaptive chatbot. -⚡ EEG engagement: significantly higher with NeuroChat - 💬 Self-reports: users described it as more human-like, fluid, and enjoyable - 📘 Learning:

Traditional neuroadaptive systems rely on fixed, pre-programmed difficulty levels. NeuroChat is the first to use generative AI to adapt on the fly. Every response — tone, depth, pacing — is co-authored by your brain and the model.

NeuroChat isn’t mind-reading. It tracks only engagement signals, not specific thoughts, memories, or emotions. 🧩 All processing happens in your browser, and it’s compatible with local AI models, keeping brain data private.
