🖌️ @HsiaoRoland Thanks for info on the title phrase of your podcast interview (非人磨墨墨磨人), as originally coming from a Su Dong-po (Su Shi) poem entitled "Answering Professor Shu About My Ink Collection for A Second Time" (次韻答舒教授觀餘所藏墨) https://t.co/qyZOPMUZqX

Really interesting episode about Chinese calligraphy as an embodied practice. I loved Roland’s discussion of the grinding of ink as a meditative process which is part of a reciprocal relationship between a calligrapher and their work.

when i was on a menswear forum, there was a nativist who would be like: 😡 "non-white immigrants are ruining white American culture" but then he would turn to me, a non-white immigrant, and ask: 🥹 "can you explain again how to dress according to classic European rules?"

Right-wingers are just saying with their whole chest now that immigrants are "the destruction of our civilization." No one seems to remember but 5-10 years ago this stuff was the province of neo-Nazis. No pretense of caring about jobs or anything like that, it's just the 14 words

I'm so saddened by the state of bespoke crafts nowadays. Seventy years ago, it would have been possible to go into a famous firm based on Savile Row or London's West End and feel reasonably assured that you're getting the best of the best. However, the decline of bespoke crafts

A brilliant, unique letter inspired by pirate treasure maps 🏴‍☠️ 🗺️ from new writer Katie. This will bring some light-hearted escapism to the recipient and a definite distraction from their illness. #DonateALetter

@leifweatherby’s new piece in The Boston Globe — pointing out that universities are fundamentally conservative in every way that matters — is awesome. One paragraph in particular (below) really gets to the heart of the matter. 1/

So when you are value captured on a metric, you force your values to conform to that impersonal standard. You leave out any of the peculiar, intimate understanding of what it's like for *you* to live following these goals and targets. Institutional de-contexting rules.

👖Always amazed at the know-how contained in tailoring, sewing, and the plethora of ways in which these processes seem so mundane and so enchanting.

ironwork in tailoring is not the same as what you do at home. when you iron a shirt, your goal is to get out the wrinkles and press the garment flat. but in tailoring, ironwork is used to create shapes.

Art saw a similar trend in recent years. Black painters who worked with black subjects saw interest surge while those who worked abstractly were left behind. Similar situation with patronage demanding only one kind of art from black people; too much to unpack in one tweet

I’ll say it again: as a black guy who doesn’t work on race (I do British lit + history of science) I’ve fought tooth & nail for the right to study what I want at every stage of my career. Doubly so on the job market where committees/deans want black scholars doing black stuff 2/
