Here's my new article on the topic:
@drjcoleman It’ll be the first I’ve seen so I’ll def subscribe, but never heard of those types changing so I’ll enjoy the read but not gain any hope.

Hi Emily. I don't agree. She didn't splice my interview, she interviewed me directly. And I agree with her premise that therapists are sometimes the cause of estrangements when they wrongly blame parents for adult outcomes.
@drjcoleman are you aware of how Abigail Shrier spliced your interview in her book and changed your meaning? Her book is really going to hurt your cause of increasing reconciliation, with parents more likely to see themselves as victims and not listen to their kids’ issues.

Yes, there's quite a bit of research in that area. I plan to write something soon on it in my Substack Family Troubles which you can subscribe to here:
@drjcoleman If there’s literature/ research on when the child (in my case son now 27) fits the profile of a narcissistic sociopath I’d love to know. They don’t change so I see my situation as hopeless.

A clear, consistent and emotionally neutral approach is often more effective over time than trying to persuade or plead.

Excellent article yesterday by @MichalLeibowitz about why millennials may be having less children and its relationship to therapeutic culture. @MPGKeynoteAgent @penguinrandom, @CCF_Families.
In @nytopinion. There are people “who try their best to deny themselves the satisfaction of that primary need, even in a world where the word ‘gossip’ is associated more with a guilty pleasure than a sin,” writes Michal Leibowitz.

Estrangement between parents and their children is surprisingly common – this is what research says about making such a difficult decision.

My newest article for @TheAtlantic about what raising boys. With quotes from @ruthwhippman, @StephanieCoontz, @Steven_Mintz, @bjrisman, @Phil_Cowan, @CCF_Families, @PenguinBooks, @MPGKeynoteAgent.
The idea that boys should be raised to be “tough” is resurgent in American culture. But that attitude, @drjcoleman writes, conflicts with research showing that to thrive, boys really need more affectionate care:
