If Ukraine manages to get out of this war with its government intact and with the freedom both to build its defenses and conclude security agreements as it sees fit, that's a win. It's a defeat for Russia no matter how much territory they abscond with.

I pick on the Restrainer crew a lot here but good lord, the folks insisting that every square foot of Ukraine is sacred need to state in exact, clear terms how Ukraine is supposed to recover all that territory.

Wow. A lot of folks who purport to believe that security guarantees are meaningless political theater seem pretty fucking terrified that there might be security guarantees. I didn't know theater was so scary!.

FWIW I’d be a bit surprised if we come out of this with a concrete security guarantee for Ukraine… but I am nevertheless taking a certain perverse joy in watching the flop sweat of folks who loudly bleated that guarantees were utterly inconceivable

Actual diplomats understand the strategic importance of talking and not talking. Pop Realists don't.

That amateurism has costs. It affects how audiences (foreign and domestic) think. It affects the strength of diplomatic relationships and the degree of commitment of both friends and adversaries.

It's important to talk, even with our enemies. This does not mean that international summits are cost-free events from a strategic perspective. Trump is in fact a complete amateur and he has surrounded himself with a team of amateurs and yes men.

In the three days since the summit it's become evident that Trump doesn't know or understand what he may or may not have agreed to. Pro-diplomacy folks are panicking over the term "security guarantees" in large part because no one understands what they mean.

Can't be on X without being angry at people for either being pro-talking with Putin or anti-talking with Putin. I don't think talking with Russia is necessarily bad but the pro-diplomacy folks have to answer for the fact that Trump is completely incompetent at negotiations.
