As a working-class Classics student I couldn't afford to buy the books on the reading list, so I used to photocopy them at the library. When lecturers got annoyed, I'd say that I was waiting for the bookshop to stock up.
Today a retired professor gave me these. 😭💖
I've always been poorly paid. My degree ('Latin (with Greek)') did not lead to a good job. Instead it led to a great life full of fascinating people, even more fascinating books, and exciting ideas that I wouldn't have traded for all the financial success in the world.
We’re protecting students and taxpayers against rip-off degree courses.
We’re limiting the number of students taking courses that:
❎ Have high drop-out rates
❎ Don’t lead to good jobs
❎ Leave young people with poor pay and high debts
It's a big day for me. After 16 years of rolling temporary contracts, trying to survive as a single parent without knowing if my job would still be there next year, I now have a permanent contract thanks to the hard work of our union. Something to celebrate! 🎉
Just seen the message from
@OpenUniversity
that Aug 1st is here and now the OU's Associate Lecturers are on permanent contracts - after 53 years of temporary employment. c. 4000 workers decasualised, a brilliant victory by

I'm not good at doing 'personal' on here - but wanted to say that, after two tough years, I finally got my divorce and can take my name back. So... hi, Twitter! I'm Cora Beth Fraser, and I can't thank you enough for your company, support and kindness. 💖
Finally finished my Kelmscott-style Aeneid page! I can quite see why it took four years for Morris and Burne-Jones to illustrate their Chaucer volume. But this was the most fun I've had in ages!
Finally reading Pandora's Jar by
@officialnhaynes
- and so of course I'm drawing Pandora, robed in silver, veiled by Athena and crowned by Hephaistos, delighting in her finery...

The online Loeb Classical Library is an amazing resource - wish it had been around when I was a student! But I do treasure the print books still!
Right, let's do this. I was so hoping to stay out of this mess completely since - being autistic (which is the whole point!) - sometimes I struggle with communication. Specifically, when I get stressed or scared I can't use words. That's a thing. But it seems that I have to.

Day 19: Hero
I've been amusing myself by attempting to illustrate the Aeneid in the manner of the Kelmscott Chaucer - but there's no way I'll get the whole page finished today, so this is a work in progress!
Made it to the end of term! Still moderation to do, and I owe a lot of people emails, and at some point I need to earn some money... but tonight, Cheers Everyone! 🍷
Tonight I am fed up, because for the first time in 16 years I nearly had a permanent contract, and the university took it away. So if anybody needs me, I will be angrily painting a wall.
Here it is: my Classical Christmas Gift Guide for 2021, full of amazing stuff from independent artists, crafters and talented classicists. Please shop enthusiastically, to support young scholars and important projects!
Well, this seemed to strike a chord! Time for a thread today on supporting working-class people coming into Classics, Ancient History, Ancient World Studies etc, in response to all the messages I've received overnight. Please add to it - particularly for non-UK resources! 1/?

Applied for my dream job, alongside people I've known and respected for years. Didn't get invited for interview, and was turned down by automated message. Will be listening to sad music and eating ice cream tonight. 😭
Well, turns out the excruciating headaches of the last few days weren't due to stress. Small boy and I both have COVID. Might not be around much for a bit. 😞
Why didn't anyone tell me that someone in the 15th century wrote an Aeneid after-party? And that someone else added pictures? And that someone else translated it into 16th century Scottish verse?
Today's Completely Pointless Bank Holiday Challenge: can I somehow include every letter in the Greek alphabet in this design without it looking weird...?
@CA_AstroComm
Nice to meet you, ladies! PhD in Latin Literature here - first person in my family to go to university. Don't usually use my 'Dr' on here, but happy to do so right now.
For anyone who's new to

... it's an email interview series which I started in March, to cheer people up and help them connect with other people in Classics during the pandemic. It's still going strong, with over 130 interviews so far! (1/2)
After almost 15 years of sticking his head in drainpipes, wrapping himself in bubble-wrap and failing to be even slightly creepy, my little black cat Max died today. He'll be much missed.❤️
Congratulations to Dr Cora Beth Fraser

Hi
#ClassicsTwitter
! I'd like to ask for your help. I'm working on building an organisation to represent neurodiversity in Classics. It's a work in progress, but we're on Twitter to make a start. So I'd like to ask you to follow
@AsterionHub
, and to retweet if you wouldn't mind!
For all those who aren't feeling very celebratory today... please accept this smol New Year's Eve Support Dragon: here to have fun so that you don't have to.

! Here are a few of my Roman poetry tile designs, celebrating some of my favourite poets: Horace, Ovid, Catullus and Statius.
Today I had a phonecall from a former student. He rings me every month or so. He doesn't need anything, and he doesn't talk long. He just tells me that I'm doing a great job, and reminds me to look after myself.
@OpenUniversity
students really are the best. 💖
A question for
#ClassicsTwitter
- what are your 'weird Classics professor' stories from your own past? Nothing nasty, and no need to name names: I'm just curious about weird quirks and eccentricities of Classics (or Archaeology) lecturers. (It's for a Thing!)
For

: Slavery, ancient and modern... my favourite 'Roman' tombstone, from Arbeia Fort near Hadrian's Wall. Regina, 'Queenie', a British woman with a Roman name, was the slave of Barates, a man from Syria. He freed her and married her. (1/2)
Today I learned that Florence Nightingale had a pet owl called Athena, and also a pet cicada called Plato. And when he died, Athena ate Plato, 'thereby consolidating two pets in one'.
Asking for

assistance... I'm working on a Minotaur Thing, and I need more Minotaurs! Ancient/modern, art/literature/film - all Minotaurs welcome. Bonus points for weird/cute/obscure. Also accepting contenders for Best Minotaur 🏆
First day out of covid isolation! The bags under my eyes have bags, and I already need a lie down, and the weather's horrible - but it's good to be out!
Today is the one-year anniversary of my
#ComfortClassics
interview series. There's no party, and sadly no cake - but I can offer you all a virtual cup of tea and a big thank you for reading or contributing during the past year!
