Always good when @DavidZipper can translate the results of a study into plain english. @johnmacpdx @CamSBennett @UTKCTR @NITC_UTC Just how climate-friendly are e-bike rebate programs? https://t.co/8kdz5LVDLn via @citylab

New research answers key questions about whether voucher programs that subsidize electric bike purchases are good for the planet — and the cities that pay for them.

Many incentive programs promote e-bike use, but they aren’t necessarily targeting the right people for the right reasons.

Excited to announce a new paper on #ebike incentives and their effectiveness at stimulating adoption. TL;DR agencies should think clearly to pair goals of a program with the costs of moving the needle on e-bike adoption. @johnmacpdx @LEVresearch @UTKCTR

A new paper that may be a little more interesting in light of the #MUTCD controversy on funny messages. "Emotionally charged advertisements" do a little bit more distracting than "neutral" advertising. @cee_utk @UTKCTR

Trend is not good. 68 dead pedestrians in 2012 --> 210 in 2022

Hot off the press. Pedestrian deaths have tripled in TN in about a decade. Almost all growth in urban areas, high speed arterials, when struck by drivers of sedans, at night (with lighting). Got a lot of work to do on urban arterials @myTDOT @UTKCTR

I printed a bunch of decks for my transportation policy class a couple of years ago. It was an awesome game to play in class.
#MoMobility is the urban transformation card game that sparks debates + inspires players to think creatively about building sustainable, equitable & joyful cities. 🃏🚍🚲🚶🏽♀️🚇🛴🏙️ Print your own deck or host a digital game! ▶️ https://t.co/x1MjSwO7ZY

People talk about signs being band aids used to limit liability. When we unevenly apply signs, we create an expectation that everything of similar risk should have a sign. When it doesn’t, I expect that we would open agencies up to more liability. The solution? More signs. 3/3

Signs are safety devices. They need to be noticed and they should have approximately equal weight. Some signs are really important, but we’ve been conditioned to ignore them all at our own (and others’) peril. @BikeWalk_TN 2/

#Civilengineers are obsessed with performative signage. Instead of focusing on actual safety improvements, they install signs that have no meaning and could actually make safety worse in the system. All to say they're doing something. @CityKnoxvilleTN @KnoxvilleParks 1/

I applaud the hard work from @pfbpolicy to classify e-bikes in a safe way. For broader classification of #micromobility, check the @SAEIntl standard J3194 that catches most microvehicles. Policymakers have language to decide where they fit. @johnmacpdx

The 3 class electric bicycle definition helps keep riders + consumers safe. We've been working for seven years to advance the definition of an e-bike across states and most recently, the @USDOT (included in infrastructure bill). @StreetsblogUSA

We’re excited about a climate bill. We need it, urgently. We’ll still support it. But not including ebikes is a massive blow and missed opportunity. More critical than ever that states keep stepping up for ebikes incentives.

More and more people are hopping on e-bikes. Here's how to make cities safer for them https://t.co/OZ2zjuPu1z via @business

E-bikes are a powerful tool for lowering carbon emissions — boosting adoption is mostly dependent on offering riders protected bike lanes to enhance safety.

Our Director Laura Sandt & @cee_utk researcher @drchrischerry talked to @robverger at @popsci about factors likely contributing to the sharp increase in traffic deaths last year, as reported this week by @NHTSAgov

Deaths from vehicles were up more than 10 percent in 2021 compared to 2020, and experts say a complex array of factors is to blame.

Great working with @NUMOalliance to refine and disseminate our #micromobility survey resource, drawn from many of the best surveys out there. If you do #survey research on scooters, get a head start here. Thanks @CSCRSinfo for funding support. @ywen8698
🛴To make transportation decisions, cities need to understand the impacts of shared #micromobility like e-scooters. ❓👉That means designing user surveys that ask the right questions. NEW BLOG from @drchrischerry + @ywen8698 ▶️ https://t.co/5Jez7yjgIJ

New study finds that injured e-scooter riders are 150% more likely to be hospitalized if a motor vehicle driver struck them. A reminder that it's cars and trucks -- not e-scooters -- that are the real threat to street safety. https://t.co/cfLeifpwEt
