it’s just incredibly disheartening that the abstraction of “AI” and all its genuinely cool possibilities has been reduced to what it is now. tech has gotten so irrevocably lame.

i’ve loved the concept of AI ever since a kid because of the Terminator films and it’s what informed my entire aesthetic and artistic taste. its been so sad to see the route “AI” has taken as a concept. it used to be so cool in my head. i still want to have some sort of optimism.

yeah it’s all over.

as a society we have progressed past the need for “archive pages”.

i also enjoy that the movie being spoken about here is literally about AI and a prospective storyline about the dangers of it. i thought it worth sharing and would love to hear opinions.

this context of CGI vs the modern context of generative AI are two extremely different technologies with vastly different implications - but it’s still interesting to revisit this take on the topic of art and technology. i do think there’s room for more nuance in the discussion.

for context, that film was one of the first major blockbusters to leverage and push the boundaries of computer-generated imagery / digital compositing to such a large and successful extent (which is the new technology he is referring to).

the late Stan Winston, FX mastermind behind groundbreaking film Terminator 2, speaking about art versus new technologies. this is in 1991 - interesting to see the relevance 3 decades later given the recent advent of generative AI.
