psa to young journalists: your career is not your whole life; neither is your internship. everyone’s path is so winding and weird and wildly unpredictable. apply wherever you want, accept both rejection and employment with grace and stay humble. above all: trust your gut.

big week for me 🥲
first national tv media hit ✅
first glaad award nomination ✅

anyone who knows me knows that none of this comes easy.
layoffs suck! my heart hurts. i still believe in journalism. but not like i used to. we need to evolve to meet changing news consumption habits while maintaining journalistic integrity. we need to better serve our readers and keep employees employed, happy and well-compensated.
i used to wish i cared less and was less kind. like life would be easier if i was callous. one of my chief lessons of 2019 was realizing i couldn’t change this about myself, nor did i *really* want to.
hi there – working on a story. if you use a wheelchair, what do you wish people knew or understood? dms open, or you can send me an email: doliver
@usatoday
.com. thank you very much.
i am choosing to say not much and stop reading about today’s media “branding” discourse because i value my sanity. i will just say: corporations are not your friends and will never value you enough. invest in yourself first, always.
i have chills. my great-grandfather fled austria before everything escalated, leaving his entire family behind. you can all guess what happened to them. but maybe now there's a way to find out more. this is so incredible.

a man came up to me after i received my award and told me that he had male breast cancer, and discussed its stigma. honored
@AACR
recognized this piece because i wrote it for men like him.
pro tip: please never start a conversation with a journalist that begins with "off the record." ask if something can be "off the record" and come to a mutual decision instead :)
some exciting news this morning ,,,,,
i won an award! ty to
@AACR
