Jeopardy thread!
Thanks so much to all of you for your love and support, every step of the way. I appreciate you all so much, and it was just the thrill of a lifetime to get to step on that stage and feel that rush of playing the game that I love so much one more time.
This goes hard.
Pablo López showing up to his G1 start wearing the jersey of Johan Santana, who pitched the Twins to their last playoff win in 2004 — and was López’s childhood idol.
Carlos Correa walked into the batting cage in the seventh and saw Ryan Jeffers hitting sliders off the machine set high to mimic Will Smith's release.
Correa: "I was like, 'Will Smith is going to throw him a slider, and he’s been practicing the slider for two innings already.'"
Carlos Correa addressed his teammates in the clubhouse after the loss.
"Remember that. Remember that, because you don’t want to ever feel that again. Next year, when you show up to Spring Training, show up better. Because we don’t want to get this far and come up empty."
Friends, some personal news:
A lifelong dream comes true for me on Monday, when I'll appear as a contestant on
@Jeopardy
!
It still feels surreal. My friends know how much I love puzzles and trivia, and I could never, in my wildest dreams, have imagined this actually happening.
Rocco brought his daughter, Louisa, into the postgame presser, and she occupied herself by finding every round object in the room to hand to her dad while he talked about Joe Ryan without missing a beat.
She found a bucket full of baseballs, so things got busy.
Oh, it's happening.
Johan Santana just showed up to throw the first pitch and Pablo López went to the mound to give him the ball.
Johan took off his jacket... to reveal that he's wearing a Pablo López jersey.
As many have pointed out, Marwin González has Byron Buxton on FaceTime in his left hand so Buxton can be a part of the
#MNTwins
championship photo.
Think that says it all about this group.
Royce Lewis, on the atmosphere:
"I don’t want to say anything horrible, but I felt like our Minnesota fans were actually louder. They acted like they wanted it more."
I’m a Minnesota kid who grew up around the streak, and it was an honor to be able to share the Twins stories of this season and postseason with you all. This team was a really good group of dudes.
Thanks so much for another season of following along.
They did it.
They did it. They did it.
The Twins win over the Blue Jays, 3-1.
They have won a playoff game for the first time since 2004, snapping an 18-game playoff losing streak that stood as the longest in North American history.
Twins fans waited 19 long years for this.
Marwin Gonzalez’s opening statement to the media:
“I’m remorseful for everything that happened in 2017, for everything that we did as a group, and for the players that were affected directly by us doing this ... That’s why I feel more regret and that’s why I’m remorseful.”
Joe Mauer is a Hall of Famer.
Not just that, but he's a first-ballot Hall of Famer -- only the third catcher to be elected in his first year of eligibility.
The St. Paul kid for whom the stars aligned for him to go No. 1 to his hometown team -- where he played all 15 seasons.
Well, here's some important context for Kenta Maeda's outing today:
The PitchCom receiver in catcher Tony Wolters' ear was too loud in the quiet Trop environment, so Rays hitters knew every pitch that Kenta was throwing before he threw it.
Still threw 2 scoreless innings.
Miguel Sanó, on Nelson Cruz:
"I hope the Twins can give him a couple more years [on his] contract, and he can retire here. ... I want to say thank you, God, for letting me play with Nelson Cruz."
#MNTwins
Carlos Correa is clearly enjoying this
#MNTwins
clubhouse:
"We're having a lot of fun. I was telling them, I f**king love this team. I f**king love to be part of this culture. Everybody's a family. Everybody's together. ... It's pretty special, what we're building here."
Max Kepler, one of the longest-tenured players in the organization, on advancing:
“I’m so grateful. I’m so grateful. I’m so grateful. I’m so grateful.”
Sergio Romo said there wasn’t much doubt to him that he’d be back with the Twins.
“First team to call. Last team to call.”
Said this was the only place he’s ever been where his neighbor came by to offer him chili. Well done, chili-toting neighbor.
Kenta Maeda sent up gifts of masks featuring his personal artwork for all of the writers that covered him during Spring Training. Am really touched.
Hoping to get back into the clubhouse this year to thank him in person and really see the personality that everyone loves.
1) Byron Buxton to the third deck
2) It went 453 feet
3) The Twins now apparently have a home run vest with "LAND OF 10,000 RAKES" written on the back??
No health issues for the Twins coming out of this one.
- Jhoan Duran had a little cut on the inside of his thumb, and they were just working on it so it wouldn't bleed.
- Carlos Correa got X-rays on his right hand that didn't show fractures. He's good to go.
Matt Wallner, go-ahead grand slam, followed by a curtain call *in the home run fishing vest*.
The youth movement is here.
Target Field might be the loudest I've heard it this year.
The Twins just dealt the Astros their second *ever* home loss in the ALDS.
The only other Houston loss in the ALDS in this building was all the way back in 2015, against the Royals. (Before that, they'd been in the NL.)
Carlos Correa is already having a lengthy chat with Royce Lewis about shortstop defense.
Two shortstops taken No. 1 overall, five years apart, discussing the craft.
Max Kepler:
"I've never seen a pitching staff like this in my career. It gives me the utmost hope to keep this going. ... You need pitching in the playoffs. We've been to playoffs before when the pitching wasn't like what it was today or yesterday. I have so much hope."
Jake Odorizzi:
"If I'm here or not here, I hope at some point they break that seal because there's a lot of really great fans, really great people inside the clubhouse. ... This city deserves some winning baseball here in the future. I hope to be a part of it."
Royce Lewis is back at third base for the
#MNTwins
today for Game 3.
1. Julien DH
2. Polanco 2B
3. Kepler RF
4. Lewis 3B
5. Correa SS
6. Kirilloff 1B
7. Wallner LF
8. Castro CF
9. Jeffers C

Carlos Correa, on the energy tonight:
"My heart was happy the whole time, just seeing how everybody showed up and supported us. We put up a great game for them, so I’m very happy not only for this win, but also that the fans had a good time and got to watch us perform for them."
Standing ovation for Chris Paddack. He allowed a leadoff single on his first pitch but quickly struck out the next three.
The stuff looks really good. Fastball up to 99.0 mph, the hardest pitch of his MLB career.
Miguel Sanó:
"We've got a great lineup, but we're not looking for the Bomba Squad this year. We got our record, and I don't think they can break it too quickly. This year, we've got something better. We've got a World Series. We're playing for the World Series."
Carlos Correa is literally FaceTiming in right now to chat with Jose Miranda and Jorge Polanco at the tail end of this event.
He’s still in a group text with many of the Twins where they talk baseball every day. Byron Buxton says he talks to Correa every week.
Asked Nelson Cruz if he would want to return to Minnesota next season.
"Definitely. This is part of my family. I have friends that I love like family."
I'm no manager or lineup expert, but this looks quite all right for the 2021
#MNTwins
, I'd say...
1. Kepler RF
2. Polanco 2B
3. Cruz DH
4. Donaldson 3B
5. Sanó 1B
6. Arráez/Rooker/Kirilloff LF
7. Garver/Jeffers C
8. Simmons SS
9. Buxton CF

6, Yankees 2.
The record: 14-10
For the first time since 2001, the Minnesota Twins have won the season series against the New York Yankees.
That is a real stat.
Uh, Byron Buxton just tripled again. Looked like he got jammed on a flare to right field, but it just kept carrying and carrying all the way off the wall. That's a strong dude.
He's 3-for-3 with a solo homer, 3-run triple and another triple.
So, to summarize... Taylor Rogers and Tyler Rogers are identical twins, one of whom plays for the Twins.
They are not related to Trevor Rogers, who is also a twin but not a Twin.
Got that?
My point being the Twins just need to acquire all these dudes
Donovan Solano said that José Altuve turned to him in the 5th inning and told him that if Lewis got on base, Altuve expected Correa to come through with a big hit. He'd seen it a ton before.
Solano: "As soon as [Lewis] got a walk, I looked at [Altuve] and he smiled to me."
As the FOX broadcast pointed out, Ryan Helsley had not allowed a hit on his curveball all season, and had only allowed a hit on a curveball once in his career.
So, of course, Luis Arráez knocked his curveball for a single after fouling off fastballs at 102 and 103.
Sonny Gray said he looked at his phone this morning and saw the notification that the
#MNTwins
had reportedly agreed to terms with Carlos Correa.
His thought: "Oh, that's us."
Carlos Correa, on Pablo López:
"What you saw today was a true ace. He cements himself with this start as one of the best pitchers in the game. There's no doubt about that. On the biggest stage, the biggest spot, with the most pressure that anybody could have, he showed up."
Well, Paul Blackburn finally threw a pitch over the plate -- and Matt Wallner hit it about 850 feet for a grand slam.
Wallner's second slam of the season. Five games left for him to challenge Royce Lewis' grand slam supremacy.
Luis Arráez exits to hugs and an ovation, his first career batting title essentially secure.
He walked twice and finished his season with a double, bringing his final average up to .316.
Limping and in pain, he'll finish the season on a 9-game hitting streak.
#MNTwins
Good news if you've got tickets to tomorrow's
#MNTwins
game: Cleveland won.
The Twins will enter tomorrow with a magic number of 1. With a win over the Angels, they can celebrate clinching the division in front of their home fans for the first time since 2010.
See you there.
Miguel Sanó, on Nelson Cruz's departure:
"He's my dad. He's my guy and everything. And I hope he comes back next year to the Twins' organization. I saw him cry, and I'm crying too when I saw him like that."
The Minnesota Twins have swept the Toronto Blue Jays with a 2-0 win in Game 2.
They are moving on in the playoffs for the first time since 2002, set for an ALDS matchup against Houston.
They allowed one run in the two-game sweep. They have the pitching to get this thing done.
Byron Buxton looks like the happiest man in the Twins' clubhouse after reporting to camp.
"The pain's gone, so I'm a lot more happy, 100 percent, 100 percent. The last couple of years were definitely painful, just waking up, feeling like a knife is in your knee every morning."
Absolutely no way. Royce Lewis hits a grand slam for the second straight day. This is absolutely ridiculous.
Crowd demands a curtain call and he comes out of the dugout in the fishing vest.
Twins lead, 6-4.
No way.
Royce Lewis. Grand slam. Again. Seriously. It's his third grand slam in just over a week and the fourth of his career. Three of those have come against Cleveland.
Twins up big at 6-0 to start this important series.
Carlos Correa, on why he's the one making the relay throw as the shortstop from pretty much foul territory in right field:
"If Julien had a better arm, then I would let him go get it. That's what I tell him."
Is this the Carlos Correa signature game? This might be the Carlos Correa signature game.
It's a very clutch Twins hit at Yankee Stadium, a double down the line as the Twins take a 4-3 lead.
Solo homer and go-ahead two-run double for Correa.
I asked Randy Dobnak what his wildest dreams for this season would have been on Opening Day. (He was in Class A Advanced.)
"Maybe making it to Double-A at the end of the year?" he said.
Tomorrow, he starts ALDS Game 2 at Yankee Stadium.
#MNTwins
Right-hander Josh Sborz, whose player page officially lists him at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, is entering the game to pitch the eighth inning for the Rangers.
Astros 3,
#MNTwins
2.
This is where the journey ends for the team that broke the streak, the one that reminded Twins fans what it meant to have hope in October, the one that had them standing and yelling to the end.
The offense fell quiet, and Houston wins the ALDS, 3-1.
ESPN has selected
#MNTwins
at Cubs on Sept. 20 for its Sunday Night Baseball national telecast.
It’ll be the Twins’ first Sunday Night Baseball appearance since 2010.
Willians Astudillo has officially completed Grapefruit League play without a strikeout or a walk in 49 ABs.
Rocco: "No one [is] surprised about it one bit. That's the fact that's nuts. We're all sitting here like, 'Of course he didn't walk or strike out the entire spring.'"
There were some really tough goodbyes happening in the clubhouse after the game, especially with Sonny Gray. This clubhouse and organization clearly meant a lot to him. From him to Buxton to Kepler, everyone raved about how uniquely tight this clubhouse was all year.
Jeffers: "I told Joey [Gallo] right before I went out there, 'Hey, if he hangs me one here, I'm putting it in the seats.'"
He was looking for Smith's first-pitch slider. He got it. He could not possibly have been more ready for it.
Byron Buxton, before the Trade Deadline several months ago:
"The Twins drafted me, so this is where I want to spend my career. There’s not too much I can say for anybody else, but for me, I know where I want to spend my career."
Oh my goodness.
Bo Bichette won't get a chance to swing in that situation after all.
Gray and Correa execute a perfect pickoff play to get Vlad off 2nd base. Stands upon review.
Absurd.
#MNTwins
6, Astros 2.
Carlos Correa and Pablo López completely took control of the game on the road and evened the ALDS at 1-1.
The Twins will return to a sold-out Target Field and throw Sonny Gray against Cristian Javier on Tuesday.
Gary Sánchez:
"He had an open lane to slide on the side, and he didn't. He slid towards me. I'm just tagging him. I had the ball first. I think the line was open for him to slide to the side. He didn't. It was a clean play."
Here's the moment Sánchez caught the ball:
Christian Vázquez stepped away from home plate before Jorge Polanco’s first at-bat back in Minnesota so Polanco could hear his walk-up music and get an ovation from the fans here. Gave Polanco a big hug before getting into his catching stance.
