Years of debate and speculation finally brought to an end. The World Snooker Championship is to remain in Sheffield until at least 2045. The Crucible will undergo a £45m upgrade and expansion allowing for an additional 50% capacity, changing to a new ‘in the round’ layout.

24 March 1976. Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery (“Monty”) died (aged 88). He commanded the British 8th Army during campaigns in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He also led Allied ground forces during the Battle of Normandy (Operation Overlord) and the 21st Army Group.
