Now is the time to be ambitious and adopt international models for process and planning which have been proven to increase women’s safety and participation in public space. The decisions taken today will either reinforce or reduce inequalities in our built environment.

Vienna’s first “Frauenbüro” (women’s office) was established in 1991 and since evolved into the Department for Gender Mainstreaming, using research based urban planning to achieve gender equality in society based on equal structures, settings and conditions for all.

If we truly want to increase women’s safety, we need women to co-create the solutions. We need their input at all levels so we can fully understand the challenges they face and the solutions they want. This practice is known as gender mainstreaming.

Mixed use planning is another measure where residential, commercial, cultural, institutional, or entertainment spaces are integrated, and co-exist. This encourages activity at all times of the day, meaning less isolation and opportunity for crime & violence.

‘Eye on the street’ is concept by urbanism activist Jane Jacobs which designs physical features (like street facing doors and windows) & activities to encourage people to occupy spaces, act as a watchful, community eye to maximise the natural surveillance

The first measure that springs to mind for most of us is increased security through good lighting, clear, wide paths, conscious landscaping for visibility of the entire space, security guards, CCTV, organized community groups.

Concern for safety shapes women’s lives and impacts where women will go, when and how we get there. Research shows that womens needs are often overlooked in public planning and often reinforce inequalities

public development is only one approach for tackling the complex issue of gender based violence, but it’s an important one. When women avoid public spaces because of threat, we lose our ability to fully participate as equal citizens.

Open, creative, fun spaces where people meet and explore were never of such value until they were taken away. Let’s help create the conditions for these spaces & this events industry to recover & flourish.

Yet still no Town Centre First Policy. Let’s make 2022 the year to turn this around: upgrade public space, put people before the car, enable re-use, champion exemplars, share what works, & collaborate to imagine & make zero carbon, livable, healthy, inclusive & beautiful towns.

@irishetchings @HugoFitzpatrick Here’s the interview we did with local leader from the skating community - interesting insights on decisions by DCC not to invest in public amenities which drove residents mad this past summer & led to this privatisation.

Going live on Instagram this evening, chatting to skater & founder of Goblin Magazine about the importance of open public spaces like portobello plaza to communities and youth culture, and the role local authorities should play in supporting rather than eradicating them
