When I was 9, an old witch put a curse on me that makes it so I’m only happy when I hear laughter. My therapist is trying to help me break that curse

I hate when I can’t tell if a guy is gay, or if he’s just really into Disney. One is super annoying, and the other one is into Disney.

I learned these tips from How to Have Impossible Conversations: A Very Practical Guide. This book helped me get more out of difficult conversations and refine my own beliefs. Check it out for more tips!

10) Use scales. "On a scale of 1 to 10, how confident are you in that belief?" If they're not a 10, ask them, "Why are you a 9 and not a 10?" This might prompt them to explore their doubts. This is often where things get interesting.

9) Consider your purpose (and theirs). Are you trying to find truth? Reach mutual understanding? Or are you trying to change their mind? People resist having their minds forcibly changed. What would you want to get out of the conversation if changing their mind was impossible?

8) Discuss contributions, not singular causes. Don’t reduce an issue to one single point of blame — discuss contributions as a way to open up dialogue. This can help avoid putting people on the defensive. "Do you think there are multiple factors that contribute to that?"

7) Change the subject! Don't just be a passenger: ask meaningful questions and steer your conversation elsewhere. "Auntie, it sounds like you really care about health. I don't know about '5G rays,' but can you tell me more about growing up in California instead?"

6) Discuss underlying values. We often agree on a core value, but have radically different ideas on how to get there. It might be easier to bond over values than opinions. "It sounds like you really care about justice, but we disagree on the finer details. Is that right?"

5) Avoid strawmanning. Instead, "steelman" ideas. Carefully restate or improve someone’s argument before debating it. This will actually make your position stronger because you are showing a deeper understanding of their position, as well as your own integrity and good faith.

4) Be genuinely open to changing your mind. If you think you’re right about EVERYTHING, I've got news for ya... You know you've been wrong about SOMEthing in the past, so accept the possibility (even if unlikely) of being wrong again. Adopt a stance of curiosity.

Do you want them to operate in good faith? Model that: “Just to be sure I'm understanding you correctly, is this a fair summary of what you’re saying?” [repeat their opinion fairly] If this sounds stupid to you, you're going to hate the next one even more:
