Interested in Paul's view on the nature of the resurrection body? Contact me for a copy of my book chapter, entitled, "A Neglected Deuteronomic Scriptural Matrix for the Nature of the Resurrection Body in 1 Cor 15:39–42," in Scripture, Texts, and Tracings in 1 Corinthians (2019).
I have some very good news to share! I have just accepted an offer to finish my PhD at the
@EdinburghUni
under the supervision of Matthew V. Novenson!!! I am overjoyed and honored to finally move on and finish my doctorate at the
#16
university in the world (QS rank)!
I love that my buddy
@maklelan
got under the feathers of Peterson as another scholarly voice debunking this nonsensical anti-social justice bent of the far-right talking heads. Dan is correct by the way, and everyone in biblical scholarship knows this.
"christofascist": enough said about this "scholar": Everything in its subsidiary place. Man and woman exist in relationship to each other, and to family, community, state, nation, up the Jacob's ladder hierarchy to the highest reaches of heaven. That's true. But it's not "social
The cat is out of the bag. I’d previously mentioned that something I’ve been dreaming up for a few years now is finally taking place next year at

, alongside a couple of my closest friends and colleagues,

and
@maklelan
. Watch the video until the end.
I just heard that my dear friend Mike Heiser died today. This is difficult to hear and to process, my heart is in my stomach today. My thoughts are with Drenna and his family. 😞
Life is devastatingly short, friends. Live it well and with love.
As many of us know, the university/college job market in the humanities is rather bleak these days, especially in religious studies. Knowing this, I have accepted a welcome offer to teach at St. Anthony High School, a private Catholic high school here in Milwaukee. (1/3)
I have posted this pic before, but without the commentary. It is important to understand where we come from to know what this kind of progress means, to grasp its significance.

I said I was gonna stick to the couple of books on my list this year and not do a crazy haul…
… then the Tuesday morning clearance sale happened. 😳

I was pumped to go back to Qumran yesterday. Many of my friends will recognize this immediately, but for the rest of you, this is Cave 4, where around 575 of the manuscripts that make up what we call the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.
I mounted my new Loeb shelves today, and I must say, they turned out great! Top shelf of course is reserved for biblical literature, the rest for Loebs. I have plenty of room to add more in the future, and in the meantime the bottom shelf will hold a smattering of ancient lit.
Excited to share that my proposal was accepted for 2023 SBL! I will be presenting in the Bible, Myth, and Myth Theory program unit. My paper is entitled, ”Star Differs from Star (1 Cor 15:41): Celestial Heirarchicalism and Exodus Tradition in Paul’s Resurrection Mythos.”

While I am happy for Matt, this was tough news for me when I found out last week. I am still trying to determine what this means for me finishing my PhD. I am very sad Matt can longer be my primary advisor. I will update people when I find out more.
Princeton Theological Seminary welcomes Matt Novenson as Helen H.P. Manson Professor of New Testament (with tenure) as a member of the Seminary's Biblical Studies Department.
@RevKevDeYoung
I'm sure everyone notices that your "review" is being published in your own cliques journal. Perhaps because you know it would get eaten alive in peer review, so you gotta stay in your echo chamber.
Truly, this will be a classic go-to volume in the field for years to come. A must have. Though I’ve had the volume digitally since just after release, I had to buy the hard copy.
Anderson Paak and Bruno Mars are just my vibe. Don’t think I can count how many times I’ve listened to Leave the Door Open since March! Bruh. That Silk Sonic album cannot drop fast enough. Take. My. Money.

Grinding on my paper and getting ready for my conference next week at Brown University, “The Meanings and End(s) of Monotheism.” Equal parts excited and trepidatious.
Thought I’d share a fun update to my setup. Stacks of books finally off the floor into my own little library carts (thanks to IKEA, and
@smehorn
for the inspo) & new printer with its own matching roller cart tucked away under the desk to roll out whenever I need it.

Excited to share my

paper proposal was accepted by the Deuterocanonical and Cognate Literature program unit. Title: “Virtuous Gods or Deserving of Death? Conflicting Early Jewish Postures toward the Gods within Ancient Mediterranean ‘Paganism.’”

Hosts of the upcoming conference, “The Meanings and End(s) of Monotheism,” sponsored by the Judaic Studies department at Brown University. The conference will take place at Brown University, May 6-7, 2024. Attend in person, or enjoy the live-stream! I cannot wait!
#AARSBL23
I'll have my summers off to head across the pond and finish my dissertation in Edinburgh, travel around Europe, visit friends, attend and participate in conferences, etc. For now, I'm thankful. (3/3)
Great to see the Fortress Academic volume I contributed to at SBL this year! Even better seeing it being cited now. Much more to come folks!

I have been invited by
@DavidBCapes
, Director of the Lanier Theological Library, to share & discuss my research with older established scholars for their Young Scholars Initiative. I’ll be in Houston Thurs, Jan 13, & will be presenting my research Sat, Jan 15. Should be fun.
Had a wonderful time earlier today w/ my doctoral supervisor & friend, the inimitable Matthew Novenson. He showed me around New College (pictured here) & highlights of the rest of Univeristy of Edinburgh. Great conversations were had as we walked, especially over lunch. Thankful.
It’s a great day folks! My proposal for the 2022
@BNTsoc
meeting was also accepted for the New Testament and Second Temple Judaism seminar! My paper title: “Star Differs from Star (1 Cor 15:41): Celestial Hierarchicalism and Exodus Tradition in Paul’s Resurrection Mythos.”

With my fellow co-conveners after wrapping up our conference, “The Meanings and End(s) of Monotheism” at
@BrownUniversity
, Department of Judaic Studies. An amazing feeling seeing what you have long dreamed up with your friends for years finally come to fruition.
I’m looking forward to sharing an important piece of the argument of my dissertation in the Bible, Myth, and Myth Theory program unit at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in San Antonio next month.

A truly engaging panel reviewing
@jasonstaples
upcoming book, Paul and the Resurrection of Israel: Jews, Former Gentiles, and Israelites with Cambridge University Press. The reviews have been honest, some critical, a few a bit scathing, but much praise as well.
#AARSBL23
Thank you to my friend
@DClintBurnett1
& to
@eerdmansbooks
for sending me a review copy of his new book! Two people with the same name (Clint’s first name is David) working on Paul at the same time lol! Looking forward to making my way through this one.
Since I fell off the past couple of years, here is my regular once a year obligatory reminder that NT Wright is wrong about resurrection in Paul.
Have a nice evening.
I think one of my biggest pet peeves in the world is when people say “Christianity” and they just mean Protestantism, particularly the American version, and don’t even realize it.
@evandeneykel
This is me eavesdropping at the coffee shop all the time. I had no idea the Midwest was a s bad as the Bible Belt when I moved here but, well, there ya go.

I had a great time today appearing as an upcoming guest on the
@data_over_dogma
Podcast! Thanks
@maklelan
for the invitation and for the blast of a conversation we had about my research. For all who are interested, keep an eye out for the episode to drop on Monday!
Thinking through some big life/career decisions lately. More on this later, but send all the good vibes to help fight the anxiety associated with making big decisions when you're 40.
Happy my second paper proposal was also accepted for the 2021 SBL. The paper I will be presenting in the Pseudepigrapha session is entitled, “”Then at My Feet a Multitude of Stars Fell Down”: The Divine Plenipotentiary Function of Abrahamic Tradition in the Exagoge 68-89.”

The papers in the "Paul and the Torah in Apocalyptic Perspective" were fantastic, and the conversation that followed was even better. What an engaging session. My wheels are turning pretty rapidly after that one.

What’s up San Antonio?!? I got here early this year for
#aarsbl23
to relax and finish my paper before all the fun so I can be fully present. Cannot wait to see so many of you!
I know I’m a few years late to the party, but delighted to finally obtain my own copy of Helen Bond’s (
@hbond9
) highly praised book on what we can learn about the meaning of Mark as ancient bioi.
Had a wonderful dinner tonight here in Providence before our conference in the morning, “The Meanings and End(s) of Monotheism.” We have an excellent group of scholars presenting exciting papers over the next two days. I’m pumped.

When I found out
@Fortresspress
had an incredible sale on select volumes of the Hermeneia commentary series, I couldn’t help but grab a few I was missing from the series. These volumes (and a couple others I already owned) are still on sale for 75% off!

Trying to finish up my SBL paper today, & let me tell you folks, I’m feeling good about my argument! If anything, it’ll be a fascinating romp through the reception history of the ascent of the cosmic mountain (Exod 24) in the Hebrew Bible & Second Temple Jewish Literature. (1/2)
A few weeks back, I received my compensation in the mail for working the Enoch Seminar. It appears the good folks at the Michigan Center for Early Christian Studies saw fit to don me with a new title: “Apocalypticism Tech.” I will henceforth be addressed with this title.
Just finished an epic bookstore run in Chicago with the mate,
@smehorn
. University of Chicago Seminary Co-op and the glorious Powell’s Chicago. Listen, if you are bibliophile and you have not been to Powell’s you have not lived. Ending the excursion with some good grub at Medici.
I am surprised, honored & most of all humbled to be the recipient of the Society of Biblical Literature's (
@SBLsite
) 2023 Richards Award for Public Scholarship. I am grateful to whomever nominated me for this recognition & will do my best to live up to it.
After coming home 2 hours late, swamped with day-before-school-starts preparations (& still working from home), this finally arrived in the mail.
@MattThiessenNT
, I’ll get to it as soon as I get in the swing, & I saw you talked about becoming divine/angelic, so that’s a plus. 👍
It will certainly be a change from teaching college students, but I am not giving up (for now) on my pursuit of the unicorn that is the tenure tract professorship. During this season of my life, this job will provide the time and means to complete my PhD. (2/3)
Ok SBL peeps, listen. While the execution (in terms of prose and maybe some argumentation) will need refining later after the conference (when they’re fully developed in my dissertation), the actual IDEAS in this paper are gonna be juicy. You’re gonna want to be there.
#AARSBL23
It’s crazy that the Shepherd of Hermas was left out of later New Testaments considering how popular it was and the fact that many of the fathers read it authoritatively.
My paper was accepted for the 54th Annual Conference of the Association of Jewish Studies in Boston in December. This gentile is honored and excited to present at my first AJS, and for the chance to see dear friends in Boston.
Sad to hear that E.P. Sanders, a giant in our field, has died. His work has opened up research pathways that many of us are on now. May he rest in peace.
Matt’s inaugural lecture was excellent and timely. While it is unfortunate he is leaving that chair at Edinburgh at the end of this term, it is highly fortunate for PTS.
Ok, academics, what is your go to writing software of choice? Word, Scrivener, Mellel? Please let me know and why, not just for me, but for anybody interested in making a switch. I am tired of having multiple Word documents to do what I want. Thanks!
I still have multiple SBL papers I need to edit and publish that have been in the pipeline for awhile. I have found it extremely difficult to find the time and energy to dedicate to these projects when I am teaching High School full time and dissertation writing in the summer.
Just went on an epic research tangent today. It was awesome. I love these moments of fruitful borderline derailment that happen in the research process, e.g. finding a primary source that helps prove arguments I've made elsewhere. I already have next years SBL paper planned out.
Well, I’m back home, another SBL in the books. While it was quite sad so many people didn’t/couldn’t make it this year (& sad that most of the UPs pulled out of the book exhibit), we still had some good times. Here are some more pics from NerdFest Deluxe 5000.
Enjoying listening to Paula Fredriksen deliver the 9th Annual John Paul II Lecture in Christian-Jewish Relations at Boston College, entitled, “Messy Monotheism: The Crowded Cosmos of Ancient Jews and Christians.” Textbook Paula. Great stuff, per usual.
Here is the answer to the question, “what does David buy when he starts making decent money?” Don’t tell my PhD advisor I’m only just now buying the hard copies of his books (I’ve had the digital copies for a while lol).
I'm so happy for and proud of my friend
@jasonstaples
for the arrival of his long awaited book! Though I may disagree with some of the contents, we've had such great conversations about it for years, and it's certainly a book worth reading and engaging. Congrats, Jason!
Cannot wait for this book! Just preordered my copy! If you're interested in historical questions surrounding the enigmatic figure of John the Baptist, I highly recommend preordering. Having spoken to James at length about this over the years, I can promise it'll be fascinating!
