Tried to tell someone I wrote books. She said everyone has a manuscript in their drawer. I said my third book is being published this May. She went on about her manuscript while I whispered to myself, “You are still an author even if no one acknowledges it but you.”

A writer is someone who writes" is such a useless, patronizing platitude. Have we reached the point with our art form of handing out participation trophies to anyone that types? You want to feel like a real writer? Do the work to get better.
