#COP29 delegates are guaranteed security only if they avoid "internal affairs" of Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan uses the UN space to push their agenda, launch rhetorical attacks on parties, and alter borders. This is unacceptable for any COP host.

I’m usually quite optimistic and imaginative, but I have no idea how anyone expects to arrive at a final text in less than 10 days time. So many brackets, so many options, so little consensus. Parties need to move much faster and move much closer for #COP29 to succeed.

Everyone is calling #COP29 the Finance COP; but the main agenda item on the New Collective Quantified Goal was delayed due to the agenda fight, has gone from a 6-page text to a 30+-text that’s hard to digest (and negotiate) and can’t start on time because G77+China are huddling.

The issues of whether the contributor base should grow (important for EU, Arab group and others opposed), questions around transparency, quantum (how much $$$) and whether private investments are included or not – still a lot of disagreement in the room.

#COP29 has started, but has been unable to agree on an agenda, with the plenary being pushed back multiple times today. It now looks likely an agenda will be adopted within minutes, but this is definitely not a great start for the Azerbaijani presidency.

oh and in case you’re wondering why we we need many strong voices from civil society at COPs: it’s because otherwise the fossil fuel lobbyists stage a complete takeover of the climate talks.

Shocking news: Demokratie findet nicht nur alle 5 Jahre in der Wahlkabine statt, manchmal gehen Menschen wählen und dann auch noch demonstrieren. Und — even more shocking — nicht alle Menschen sind in diesem Land wahlberechtigt. Demokratische Werkzeuge sind vielfältig. Gut so!
Wäre es nicht besser gewesen, vorher wählen zu gehen als nachher zu demonstrieren?

Aber ja, neue Framings abseits von „Klima“ notwendig: Klimaschutz als Hochwasserschutz, Klimaschutz als Heimatschutz, Klimaschutz als Anti-Teuerungs-Maßnahme, Klimaschutz als Unabhängigkeitsgarant, Klimaschutz als soziale Gerechtigkeit. Und auf einmal wählen das ganz viele.

Ich glaub das ist ein gefährlicher Trugschluss. Umfragen zeigen regelmäßig breite Mehrheiten für Klimaschutz. Über alle Parteien hinweg. Aber es gibt mächtige Gegeninteressen, die Verbotsängste und Misinformation streuen. Gute Berichterstattung deswegen wichtiger denn je.
Eines der traurigsten Dinge, die wir uns eingestehen müssen: Den Menschen ist das Klima komplett egal. Berichterstattung ist schon länger vergebene Liebsmüh. Mir tun die Leute sehr leid, die sich darauf spezialisiert haben.
