The long-game strategies of the NRA and same-sex marriage advocates in particular have important lessons for those of us in animal advocacy.

The political landscape has changed, and no two movements are the same. But the lessons on persistence, sophisticated organizing, and communications strategy are invaluable.

I revisited Engines of Liberty by David Cole to prep for speaking with the author. Essential reading for advocates of all stripes! It traces how movements reshaped U.S. law on marriage equality, gun rights, and human rights.

This report is from the Institute for Policy Studies. Even if you don’t agree with all of their framing, the numbers on the Giving Pledge show a huge opportunity to help others if pledges were fulfilled.

It is possible to move resources quickly to reduce suffering and save lives (we were able to get our programs fully active via expert practitioners within a year + many groups can help regrant). It's a tragedy is seeing *pledged* money sit idle for decades when so many need help.

If all living original pledgers met their 50% commitment today, $367B would flow to charities. That's 30x US global health giving, more than GDP of over 150 countries, infinitely more than what goes to help animals on factory farms. .

The scale of the gap is staggering!.• Original 2010 pledgers are 283% richer today.• Only one couple (the Arnolds) has met the pledge while alive.• Roughly 80% of giving goes to private foundations or donor-advised funds instead of working charities.

15 years on, the vast majority of Giving Pledge billions are still sitting in fortunes, not saving lives or reducing suffering. Dustin and Cari at Open Phil and the Arnolds show it is possible to move fast + smart (not to mention @navigationfund).

Small donor programs are about so much more than raising money. They build supporter lists, locate volunteers, and create the raw materials of power. Sometimes it’s fine for groups to go without those skills but for groups that want real power, letting them atrophy is a mistake.

What a legend! So amazing of @dwarkesh_sp to highlight this issue and then make such a generous gift. This match is a great opportunity to make a big impact for animals.

Grateful to @AdamSchiff and the 30 Senators speaking up for Prop 12 and similar animal welfare laws. These laws mostly ensure that animals can turn around and stretch their limbs. Voters passed them in landslides. The fact that we’re still fighting this is absurd.

This piece hints at something crucial and underfunded in sectors like farm animal welfare and climate: campus organizing that develops future leaders, rather than simply taking advantage of fertile ground for protest. Nearly all of the strongest advocates I know in their 30s.
