I keep hearing of teachers working late into the night/ early hours of the morning - recording lessons and preparing resources for live teaching. It’s important not to normalise this. It’s unsustainable and will lead to burnout by February half-term, if not sooner.
@darynsimon
I worry that ‘perfect’ recorded lessons are hoped for. No bloopers. No verbal ticks (if you say ‘ok’ 20 times that’s actually ok!). Maybe resist the lure of watching them in full after recording. Of course you’ll spot things you’d like to re-do. But that’s not real life.
@darynsimon
Yes!! Actually- I burned out already and despite being a super dedicated teacher I’ve totally changed what I’m doing so that I can actually be in front of that computer as little as possible. I’m isolated, depressed, and exhausted.
@darynsimon
I've been concerned about this too, especially those with children themselves. Agreed, this must not become the new normal. There's so much talent out there to be lost to burnout.
@darynsimon
Absolutely. Things are so difficult in schools at the moment - I know of teachers being pushed to offer more than other schools so as to 'impress' MAT leaders. Sustainability and welfare should be priorities in terms of staff and students - in my view, anyway!
@darynsimon
I think the public need to be aware that there are lots of teachers that are teaching an almost full class in school and providing remote. How long can that last?
@darynsimon
Very hard to avoid at the moment, with two little ones at home, I lose all of my free lessons when I would usually do my planning and assessment. I work until gone 9 each night just to get things ready for the following day, cannot wait to get back to ‘normal’
@darynsimon
It is very hard not to. I am only p/t but in AP and if I don't prep online resources the class basically isn't functional wrt engagement. But I agree. It isn't sustainable. I am up by 7 and working right up to bedtime, also homeschooling my own. No idea how f/t staff are coping.
@darynsimon
I'm blaming home life, I leave school at 5, but its gone 8 before kids and dinner etc are sorted so 8-10 is working time at the moment.
Going to try and record lessons while in school today to have a night off
@darynsimon
This is why feedback loops are so important in schools. We have a padlet running constantly so that teachers can feedback to LT anonymously. We then discuss in LT and feedback to staff. It means if workload becomes too much, we can make changes and adapt.
@darynsimon
Oh no . . . That is not good at all. Need to get into the habit of taking 1 recording & uploading that. The kids like you as you are & the mistakes make it feel a little more natural. I also created "office hours" where I was active on the GC. Meant I wasn't always answering qs
@darynsimon
@ChapelAToday
Yes this is anti-resilience and I’m so sorry to read it. We GPs have that same expectation by society. It’s really hard to say ‘No. I value my well being’ as it implies it is at the expense of the other
