‘Teachers shrug their shoulders and think: this is what a job in education requires. And it’s not. It is not healthy, not for teachers, not for their family and not for the children they teach’ 👈100%
We need to stop normalising martyrdom in teaching.
@darynsimon
Well said Daryn self well being is essential to support the academic and pastoral care of both your immediate family and the pupils within your care. You cannot effectively do this if you are burnt out tired stressed it has a huge ripple effect throughout personal and prof life

Yes it's the holiday camp medal syndrome as I call it. The rush to say I work everyday in the holidays and 766 hours a weekend. It is as if we are afraid to say - yes the holidays are a real

Have been told about schools who have a teacher of a month etc. Usually the speech goes, ‘they spend every evening here until 10pm, making sure everything is done’. We must stop praising this behaviour and making others feel guilty for not mirroring it.

Could agree with you more. We need to be able to pull back from the job, assess what's doable and out ourselves and our actual lives first when it comes down to it.

Martyrdom is an entirely different situation to this: “It was the feeling of never being trusted, my voice not being heard.” Everything she did had to be turned into a set of data. “I was being constantly monitored & told off. I had no professional control at all.”

(1) Wellbeing is recognised only at a micro level because Wellbeing is about individuals, there are nods towards attempts to address this on a macro level but all relationships do not fit into one size fits all - what works for me may not work for you.
@darynsimon
(2) It is essential that you have leaders who understand the impact of the profession, how is the job affecting those in that setting at that time - leaders need to reflect constantly about what staff are being asked to do to manage the there & now.
@darynsimon
(3) It is essential that you have leaders, at all levels, that understand Negative Mental Health, & recognise the triggers that can tip that scale.
@thosethatcan
is 100% correct, relationships, Trust & belonging is key - if the top understands & supports then a team is valued.
@darynsimon
(4) If a team is valued then there are no barriers to conversation,no awkwardness when discussing workload,mutual understanding, mutual respect,mutual support. It’s all about being Human & belonging

subtext to early Monday morning greetings: "so you didn't read or reply to my e-mails sent Sunday evening..." Nah, I was playing Super Mario Bros. Wii with my kids.
@darynsimon
Twitter is wonderful for teaching. But tweets from people working all weekend or people up at 4:30am who are marking books, are part of the problem. They normalise martyrdom
@darynsimon
WORK THE CONTRACT!!! the more you do outside of the contract only hurts everyone else, including yourself. Why would we ever make more money it be treated fairly when we do this to ourselves and each other. THE KIDS WILL BE FINE!!!
@darynsimon
Teachers need to care for themselves more. Teaching = a great art when done well and getting students to think & learn who don't want to= the best sales prof in the world. Happens every day. Bad leaders reuse the tea-bag 10 times and try to squeeze more.

Really sad to read but I believe this has become the 'norm' for many members of SLT and teachers struggling to maintain anything close to a 'healthy work life balance'.
