@AarefRodriguez @realvargas325 @latimes @LAUSDSup Respectfully, strikes are 🔑 (&last resort) for systemic change so students don’t suffer bc the education system is broken. As an LAUSD teacher myself, I know this won’t fix it all, but so far LAUSD has only brought band aid solutions that will only perpetuate a broken system.

LAUSD is contributing to the poverty and unhoused in LA unless they step up and invest the $5 billion they have in reserves now!
On the streets of LA I've met unhoused retired teachers, paraprofessionals living in tents, current teachers living in their cars - and dozens of LAUSD families trying to survive. My wholehearted solidarity to the unions who are fighting for justice. You deserve more.

I’m excited for a new school year. I always get really hopeful for all the awesome science I get to do with my students. Support our classroom’s wishlist:

To ask teachers to be on the front line of mass shootings, the front line of a pandemic, and the front line of the struggle against inequality all while underpaying them and systematically underfunding the education system is both cruel and a recipe for societal collapse.

LAUSD reopening schools is something that I've been looking forward to for a year now. The reality of it is a bit more complicated than that. I appreciate @kystokes for taking the time to hear me out and understand it from my students' POV. #LAUSD #mannuclacs
"When there is another outbreak of #COVID19, it will again disproportionately affect #Black & #Latinx communities." #LAUSD parents grapple with choice to send kids back to campuses. In the hardest-hit neighborhoods, many say they won't. https://t.co/BjsVU4Qbqq

LOL the windows in my classroom only open 2 inches wide and my school was built sometime in the 1930's 🙃 #sendhelp
The CDC is urging schools to reopen as soon as possible, but questions of proper ventilation remain. The New York Times worked with experts to understand the simple steps schools can take to reduce coronavirus exposure in the classroom.

Example #648373528 of systemic racism reaching every corner of our society.
Black households are more likely to have student debt — and more of it — than white or Latino families. They're also more likely to default on their loans, even if they've earned a bachelor's degree, thanks to discrimination in the labor market. (9/10)

While we're critiquing buzzwords being thrown at teachers this year, can we also do away with State testing? How can any bit of the data be useful this year? You're gonna get a measure of which students had good WiFi and no other responsibilities besides being a student.

As we watch Trumpers storm the capital with guns. Just a reminder, this is what America did to Native protesting for clean water.

Last reply: Also, remember the pandemic happening right now?! A pandemic that is having untold mental and physical impacts on all of us: teachers, students, families (especially students of color!!!!). But yes, grades are definitely the convo we need to be having right now.

Who am I to punish a student for having to babysit younger siblings and cousins, for having working class parents who can't help with schoolwork (same people who go into work so society is OPEN), or for living in an area with WiFi outages, etc. #yallneedtochill

This semester, grades are a measure of access to Internet and tech, not of learning or mastery. Access is also more than just having a device and connection BTW. We're trying our best to teach and grade but nobody is an expert on how to do this effectively.

As someone whose childhood home is technically in Santa Ana, grew up hanging out in Westminster/Garden Grove, and went to high school in Fountain Valley...this map checks out.
There are like 7,000 tiny stories waiting to be written about Orange County here https://t.co/J6fv2qHgeS

Teacher speak translated: IEP = Individualized education program usually for students with special needs, EL = English learners, GATE = gifted students (according to a test)

One of my issues with being a tired and overworked teacher is that I feel like I'm always treading water with lesson planning, grading, etc. The students most affected by this are those with IEPs, the ELs, and the GATE students. 😩

Decided to end my last class 30 min early because my 8th graders were complaining of headaches, sore eyes, and their backs hurting. THEY'RE 12-13 YEARS OLD

To the #parentsofLAUSD from a #teacherinLAUSD: more hours≠more learning. I'm worried for the health and well-being of our students and teachers.
Virtual school should not mimic school held in-person. They certainly can be similar, but they are not the same. 7 hours in front of a screen is not learning, it’s punishment.
