As the plane vanishes from the radar, lost to the ancient mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, somewhere a girl drops her sea blue crayon and picks up her favourite, outrageously orange. She furiously colours each tentacle of the giant kraken as it reaches towards the sky. #sffiction.

My body is drawn to yours, just as before. Each part knows what to do. An act so well rehearsed. But we must hide. We say goodbye. I turn to leave, but not before I hear a closing door. Our secret is no more. I cannot move. We are the performance they all came to view. #sffiction.

I’m resigned to benign conversation. I curse each empty word that separates us. My laugh hollow as the glass of dry wine I sip from. I lie ‘I’ve left my scarf’, rush back, and there you are to greet me with a kiss. Your mouth on mine before I can retreat. Not that I do.#sffiction.

I imagined I’d be safe in the dark. But I don’t need to see, to feel your gaze upon me. Heat creeps across my chest, proof of your proximity. You redden my neck without a touch, flush my cheeks. As the lights lift, I see, your eyes, their eyes, watching you watch me. #sffiction.

I shouldn’t have come, fooled myself that I could sit here, enjoy the show, no one would know, if we kept our distance, averted our eyes, spoke politely. I hoped my thoughts were hidden. Jagged breath and thumping heart unheard beneath the music and thunderous applause.#sffiction.

I sprinkle a circle of salt around my lips to protect us all from the ghosts in my throat. The spectres of my past sometimes slip out. So now I clench my teeth, make them retreat. Look close, you’ll see them haunting me, behind my eyes. #sffiction.

The day I thought my father had died a white owl followed me home. A pale ghost gliding beside my car, silent, effortless. I knew it was him. I cried, said goodbye as it vanished with the fading light. My father didn’t die that day but the owl was the last I saw of him.#sffiction.

You told me if I swallowed the seeds of the apple, they would plant inside me and a tree would grow. You’d peer in to my mouth to see branches reaching up through my throat. You’re old now and forget me but I still have a head full of trees and pink apples on my cheeks.#sffiction.
